UD, DelTech receive federal grant for bird flu training

University of Delaware and Delaware Technical and Community College will receive $424,000 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture?s Foreign Agriculture Service to provide avian influenza related training and technical assistance to Romania. The grant will focus on coordinating efforts between government agencies, universities and Romania?s commercial poultry industry. There will be emphasis on increasing biosecurity protocols in commercial operations. Delaware experts will also share their experience dealing with a bird flu outbreak in their own state in 2004. The Delmarva International Poultry Partnership will provide technical assistance. The partnership was created in 2005 by UD and Delaware Tech to provide avian disease prevention and production expertise around the world. The grant covers the period between Aug. 2006 and July 2007.
