Undersea Internet Sub-cables Broken in Mediterranean - December 2008

Per Times Online, some undersea sub-cables have just broken; the effect isn't known yet.

"Interoute, the internet networks company, report that three of the four internet sub-cables that carry run from Asia to North America have been damaged. These carry more than 75 per cent of traffic between the Middle East, Europe and America. It's hard to gather what this actually means - for example, does that mean that the internet is down or (more likely) significantly slower than usual between the Middle East and America? (If you're reading this, then lets face it, the internet has not shut down altogether)"

Mass Internet outages in Egypt after cables cut

AP - 2 hours 15 minutes ago

CAIRO, Egypt - Egypt's communications ministry says Internet cables in the Mediterranean Sea have been cut, causing massive Internet outages.

The ministry says three Internet cables running through the Mediterranean were cut Friday morning. Throughout the country the Internet is almost completely down or working sporadically.

The ministry says it will take "several days" for cables to be repaired and is trying to switch Egypt's Internet to an alternative route.

It is the second large-scale Internet outage in Egypt this year. Undersea cables were also damaged in January, causing outages in the Mideast and India.

Yemen and Sudan were also having phone and Internet difficulties Friday, but it was unclear if it was connected to the outage.

Internet and telephone Asia-Europe disrupted after cables break
3 hours ago - http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5iMmOQ6-iWtPFKN7SAe24g7A9jenQ - Google translate from French

PARIS (AFP) - The failure of three submarine cables in the Mediterranean since Friday morning disrupts telephone links between Europe and the Asia / Middle East and the Internet in Egypt and the Middle East, according to operator France Telecom and a provider in Egypt.

"The cut, whose causes remain unclear, is located in the Mediterranean between Sicily and Tunisia, on segments linking Sicily to Egypt," said France Telecom, which claims to have found such failures in the early morning and will send a boat maintenance.

"The traffic (telephone) Europe to Algeria and Tunisia is not affected, but traffic from Europe to the Middle East and Asia is interrupted more or less constantly," he said.

Among the areas most affected routes to the Maldives is down to 100%, to India to 82%, to Qatar and 73% to 71% in Djibouti, said France Telecom, which issued the status on Friday morning.

Traffic was also disrupted to many other countries, including Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Egypt or Malaysia.

Internet traffic is "partly" to hit the island of Reunion and 50% to Jordan.

France Telecom "was immediately put on alert one of two boats maintenance on the Mediterranean, the Raymond Croze + +".

The ship-France Telecom Cable Marine, based in the Seyne-sur-Mer (Var), appareils tonight aboard with 20 kilometers of cable alternatives. It should be place on Monday morning.

According to France Telecom, the situation should improve on December 25 and returned to normal at 31 December.

In Cairo, the Internet was unavailable Friday and disturbances identified elsewhere in the Middle East, said the company provider and the official Egyptian agency Mena.

"We know that these cables were damaged. But we still do not know exactly where and why. They cover the entire Middle East, India and other countries", told AFP Shahid al -Sateeh, director for the Middle East Reliance GlobalCom, a company based in India.

Besides Egypt, disturbances affecting the whole of the Middle East, according to Mena. According to the same source, cut occurred Friday at 08H00 GMT, and Reliance GlobalCom sent a submarine to carry out repairs.

To restore the faster service, cable Internet reinforcements should be used as well as satellite connections and, in Egypt, the improvement is expected in 12 hours, said Mena.

In January 2008, five cables in the Middle East and Europe had been damaged, causing disruptions in Internet services.

Call centers were affected in Egypt, as in India, where they worked more than 30% of their capacity.

The blackout also affected several Gulf Arab countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman.

I wonder to know whether the trouble is on the cable(s) or into communication centre(s).

In southern Italy a strategic telecommunication hub exists, and through it transits a huge amount of data from Europe to N Africa a Near-East and Asia.

No mention of trouble - as expected - in main television news reports this evening, in Italy.

India suffers massive internet disruption after undersea cables break

Murad Ahmed, Technology Reporter

Tech Central: er, something's happening

Millions of people across the Middle East and Asia have lost access to the internet after two undersea cables in the Mediterranean suffered severe damage.

Huge numbers in Egypt and India were left struggling to get online as a result of the outage, when the major internet pipeline between Egypt and Italy was cut.

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) throughout the region, including those in United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, also reported problems. International telephone calls, which have also been affected, are being rerouted to work around the problem.

Industry experts told The Times that two sub-sea cables went down just off Alexandra, causing the mass disruption. It happens to a single cable typically once a year, and companies have developed the fail-safe of redirecting traffic to a second cable should this occur.

?It is incredibly rare to experience a dual-break where both cables are down simultaneously,? said a spokesperson for Interoute, the internet networks company.

The Egyptian ministry said it will take ?several days? for cables to be repaired and is trying to reroute Egypt?s internet connections.

Indian ISPs said their problems were due to the cable damage off Egypt. Speaking to reporters, Rajesh Chharia, president of the Internet Service Providers? Association of India, said: "Information technology companies, software companies and call centres that provide online services to the UK or the US east coast are the worst affected."

Rafaat Hindy, from the Egyptian ministry, said: "Despite this being an international cable affecting many Gulf and Arab countries, we are closest to it and so we have a lot of responsibility.

"We are working as fast as we can."

It is thought that up to 70 per cent of web services in Egypt, and 60 per cent in India, were disrupted yesterday. There were reports that phone and internet difficults had spread to Yemen, Sudan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

The shut down will take several days to fix, and could have a major impact on the region and across the world. It is likely to hit businesses who will struggle to communicate in the affected countires. Call-centres who work for British companies are likely to be offline or hard to contact in the coming days. Others warned that bank and stock market trading could be affected.

The digital blackout highlighted the vulnerability of global communications. Hundreds of millions of people access the web, but the vast majority of international traffic runs through a a small amount of cables submerged below the sea.

Industry insiders warned that a domino effect was occuring today, causing the disruption to spread across the globe. As companies? private internet services went down, workers were forced to use the public internet and mobile phones to communicate. This has resulted in a heavy strain on phone and internet networks, meaning calls could go down and cause the internet to become slower or blackout completely.

Cable breaks cut Internet in Mideast, South Asia
Sat Dec 20, 2008 1:12am EST

By Jonathan Wright

CAIRO, Dec 20 (Reuters) - Breaks in three submarine cables which link Europe and the Middle East have disrupted Internet and international telephone services in parts of the Middle East and South Asia, officials said on Saturday.

The disruption reduced Egypt's Internet capacity by about 80 percent. Technicians were restoring some capacity by diverting communications traffic through the Red Sea, said a Communications Ministry official, who asked not to be named.

Residents said Internet service was either non-existent or very slow. The gravity of the outage, caused by breaks in cables in the Mediterranean off Italy, varied from area to area and according to the service provider.

In Pakistan, Internet service provider Micronet Broadband said its customers were facing degraded Internet services because of "issues" on the SMW-3, SMW-4 and FLAG lines.

In January, breaks in undersea cables off the Egyptian coast disrupted Internet access in Egypt, the Gulf region and south Asia, forcing service providers to reroute traffic and disrupting some businesses and financial dealings.

Several Egyptian residents said late on Friday that it was impossible to call the United States but calls to Europe appeared to be going through.

In Pakistan, Micronet engineer Wajahat Basharat said on Saturday Internet traffic was congested and slow and some of it was being diverted to other routes.

"SIGNIFICANT OUTAGE"

The International Cable Protection Committee, an association of submarine cable operators, said it was "aware of multiple submarine cable failures in the Eastern Mediterranean area that may be affecting the speed of Internet communications on some routes."

It said in a statement on its website it did not know what had caused the problem.

Stephan Beckert, an analyst with the U.S.-based telecommunications market research firm TeleGeography, said the three affected cables were the most direct route for moving traffic between Western Europe and the Middle East.

"If those three cables were cut and are completely out, it would be a fairly significant outage," he said.

"It is going to cause problems for some customers. It's certainly going to slow things down," Beckert said, adding that he did not believe financial institutions would be hit hard.

"Generally speaking we find that they are extremely painstaking about making sure that they have redundant capacity," he said. Continued...

Officials with AT&T Inc and Verizon Communications, the two largest U.S.-based carriers, said that some customers in the Middle East had lost all service, while others were experiencing partial disruptions on Internet connections.

Verizon had rerouted some of its traffic by sending it across the Atlantic, then the United States, across the Pacific, and on to the Middle East.

A New York Stock Exchange spokesman said he was unaware of any disruptions in trading. Exchanges CME Group, and IntercontinentalExchange said they had no disruption in their trading on Friday. Global company: the earthquake cut cable Internet .. And complete: repeat the process with a surprising

Mohammad Mujahid, Amir Haider, 12-23-2008

The internal communications in a global information technology companies based in between Egypt and Italy on the cause of the earthquake near the coast of Italy in the cut 6 cables freely near the island of Sicily, which caused the interruption of the net.

The letter, seen by ?Egyptian today?, and to ensure the listing of the company's problems after a cable to an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale hit the bottom of the Mediterranean and caused the cut cables in succession Navy.

And Dr. Tarek Kamel, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, to break the recurrence of the phenomenon of marine cables need to explain, especially to the six cables were cut in just 20 minutes, which is unusual.

Said on the sidelines of the investment forum Monday night, the companies owning three of the cables, which feed was cut off and Egypt on Friday morning bound by international contracts to provide clarifications about the incidents, which we will know after the end of the ship repair the cables.

He added that the repairs will take a period of between two and four days at the latest, is expected to be the end of this week, but made clear that the reform of all the cables could take weeks to consider that the reform is carried out on a sequential.

The minister invited to Arab companies to invest in fiber-optic cables, to avoid the negative repercussions of spare cables unlikely to be competition among international companies in the cause of some of these companies to cut the cables Navy, said: There are many reasons behind the interruption, such as poor weather conditions or shocks ground.

The full that there is no substitute for the alternative use of marine cables in the transfer of international communications and the Internet, pointing out that the feasibility of marine cables were not significant in the past, that is the reason behind the lack of interest of the Egyptian companies to obtain licenses for the provision, but the situation is different now kidney.

He added: ?There is an increase by 50% in the intensity of the use of the Internet in Egypt, where they do not exceed 20 GB last year, up to 30 GB during the year?.

He said the cost of establishing a cable ranging between 150 and 180 million dollars, is expected to be one of the cable operation of the Egyptian in the first half of next year, to be caused by a cable in the second half of the same year, the cable will begin the third Egyptian to work in 2010.

He stressed that the compensation that might be linked to Egypt, which the causes of interruption of the cable ships announcements of reform, pointing out that the cut cables, which occurred in January have not been revealed so far on its causes, despite the presence of weights caused the cut in one of the ships, which was not monitored by the Egyptian maritime authorities .

With regard to international economic and financial crisis, the minister said that Egypt would reduce dependence on the world market compared to maximize the reliance on the local market in view of current conditions.

He said that the government seeks to maintain growth rates in the telecommunications sector and information technology, and there will be a focus on projects to speed up the mechanization of the Egyptian government, which does not respond to some of those plans as required, as the concepts developed.

He added that the Ministry of Communications, currently monitoring the number of minutes of international roaming calls, as it relates to tourism and is considered an indicator of the movements of the international market.

He continued: target volume of Egyptian exports of information technology industry to 2 billion dollars by 2012, pointing out that the industry ?outsourcing? could be activated in the next stage, because of the current financial crisis with the trend of companies to reduce their expenditure by relying on other companies for a portion of its activities.

The minister denied reports about the Egyptian market saturation of mobile services or fixed communications, pointing out that there is a million a month to join the mobile companies, and that Telecom Egypt has succeeded in the annexation of 700 thousand subscribers, after having to cancel fees on fixed-line installation.
