Updated: August 19, 2025 19:10
RT TV: Yesterday U.S. President Trump met with Zelenskyy and several European leaders at the White House. Does China have information about the meeting? What is the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s view on the meeting?
Mao Ning: China believes that dialogue and negotiation provides the only viable way out of the Ukraine crisis, and supports all efforts conducive to peace.

Xinhua News Agency: There has been new development in the situation about Ukraine. Under the current circumstances, what is China’s position on the Ukraine crisis? How does China see the prospects of resolving the crisis? What kind of peace agreement does China hope to see?
Mao Ning: China’s position on the Ukraine crisis is consistent and clear.
China did not create the Ukraine crisis, nor is China a party to it. Even so, China has since day one held an objective and fair position and promoted talks for peace. President Xi Jinping put forward four principles, namely, the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries should be respected, the purposes and principles of the UN Charter should be observed, the legitimate security concerns of all countries should be taken seriously, and all efforts conducive to a peaceful settlement of the crisis should be supported. These principles are all the more relevant given the current circumstances. We have also issued a position paper of the Chinese government, sent the special representative on several rounds of shuttle diplomacy, and launched the Group of Friends for Peace on the Ukraine crisis at the UN to speak out with a fair and objective voice and promote talks for peace. China stands ready to, in light of the will of the parties concerned and together with the rest of the international community, continue playing a constructive role for the political settlement of the crisis.
EFE: Different leaders have said in the last hours that President Putin and Zelenskyy may meet within two weeks. Since President Putin is expected in China in early September for the SCO summit and World War II commemorations, does China see the possibility that such a meeting could take place here?
Mao Ning: We do not respond to hypothetical questions.
AFP: Ukrainian President Zelenskyy told reporters outside the White House on Monday that he was ready for a bilateral meeting with Putin. President Trump has also spoken by phone with Putin and said that he would hold a three-way summit with the Ukrainian and Russian leaders. Just a follow-up question on how the Chinese Foreign Ministry views the talks held between Zelenskyy and Trump yesterday and how do you view a potential peace summit between Putin and Zelenskyy?
Mao Ning: I just shared China’s position. We believe that dialogue and negotiation provides the only viable way out of the Ukraine crisis, and support all efforts conducive to peace.
Reuters: A question about the Alaska summit. So President Putin has had phone calls with leaders of India, Brazil, Belarus, South Africa and some Central Asian countries since the summit with President Trump in Alaska. Could we expect Chinese leader to also speak with President Putin soon?
Mao Ning: Chinese and Russian Presidents maintain smooth channels of communication. For the specific question, I have no information to share.
...
Reuters: This is regarding the Alaska summit as well. Would China be willing to provide security guarantees in any Russia-Ukraine peace settlement?
Mao Ning: We don’t respond to hypothetical questions.
