Hunting on wild migratory birds banned in 9 regions in Ukraine

21.09.2006, 17.16

KIEV, September 21 (Itar-Tass) -- The hunting on wild migratory birds was banned in nine regions in Ukraine to prevent bird flu from penetrating in the country, the press service of the Ukrainian Ministry for Agrarian Policy told Itar-Tass on Thursday.

The emergency anti-epizootic regional committees took the corresponding decisions.

In particular, the ban is imposed in the Crimea, the Dnepropetrovsk, Nikolayev, Odessa, Poltava, Suma, Kharkov, Kherson and Chernigov regions.

There are no birds sick with bird flu in Ukraine now, the press service said.

The Ukrainian Emergencies Ministry earlier said it is ready to counteract a possible penetration of bird flu. In December 2005 the Ukrainian State Forestry Agency banned the bird hunting in order to reduce the probability of bird flu spread, as a bird flu outbreak was registered in the Crimea.
