Swine flu death toll in Ukraine reaches 16
Today at 15:54 | Interfax-Ukraine Eighty-five swine flu (A/H1N1 virus) cases have been confirmed in Ukraine and 16 people have died from the disease," Liubov Nekrasova, chief doctor of the Central Sanitary and Epidemiological Station, has said.

"The tentative conclusion is as follows: we can say that this type of virus [A/H1N1] now prevails on the territory of the country, and the majority of cases are caused by this type of virus. But there also other viruses, including seasonal flu and respiratory viruses," Nekrasova told a press conference in Kyiv on Nov. 12.

We remind that two days ago, Nov. 10, Ukraine has recorded 67 cases of swine flu, with 14 dying from the virus.

Among the topics discussed during the telephone conference were: quantitative and qualitative support laboratory research, because crucial time, frequency and accuracy of fence materials and deceased patients, the role of surveillance and monitoring ...; advice to doctors and family therapist who first examined patients, especially pregnant and mothers, the state of emergency, the problem of tracking patients with prehospital phase, especially the treatment of children, the quality of intensive care and many others. Discussions on all issues was accompanied by the advice of international experts who concurrently informed of world experience.

Health Minister of Ukraine Vasyl Knyazevich appealed to scholars and specialists on a request to consolidate and react to changes in flow dynamics or clinic diseases. Protocols have doctors from different patients on maintenance may vary, but doctors in the field must constantly feel the support of experts to make correct decisions. This is especially true of heavy patients and pregnant women. Vasily Knyazevich also stressed that preventive treatment should be made strictly in hospitals. He focused on the problems of sorting patients, strict adherence to treatment tactics. Vasily Knyazevich warned doctors of the appointments at their discretion, called strictly adhere to treatment protocols and advice of international experts. comment: not sure what to make of this story, so I'm posting it for your perusals. Possibility remains that H1N1 is not the only pathogen and that a parainfluenza virus has either been involved in co-infections or has recombined/reassorted as result of co-infections. IMO it's highly probable that it's just the cytokine storm phase of H1N1 2009A infections that this doctor is referring to, and perhaps he doesn't realize the associated severity of cytokine storm presenting in severely ill patients....if he does though, and still is claiming this to be a second pathogen, then I wonder......

Probably these are all severe pneumonia cases and do not reflect the overall CFR in Lviv, but 8/10 is scary.....

WHO: Influenza virus A/N1N1 dominates in Ukraine

Actually, that's what we would want to see. If they only have lab facilities to test 10 samples, you want them taken from the sickest patients. We would be much more concerned if all 10 samples came from cases that weren't hospitalized (you would suspect a second, more severe agent).

Not tropical mind you, but guess what looks exactly like a severe
influenza for the first 2 or 3 days and then ends causing death by hemorrhage?

CCHF, Congo-Crimean Hemorrhagic Fever, found in southern Ukraine, Turkey, all the -stans.

Interesting thought. However the reports of pneumonia are not consistent with CCHF. Tick activity is decreasing at this time of year as well, with frosts and freezes beginning to occur in the Ukraine. Seems unlikely that CCHF would be a major contributor to this outbreak at this time.

No evidence of CCHF.

Evidence of H1N1.

At this stage all evidence supports H1N1 causing illness in Ukraine without need for help from other antigens.

Actually there is a need to consider an alternative.
Critical to the differential is the timing of the hemorrhage.
H1N1 can not cause hemoptysis before a condition approaching
ARDS.
Hemoptysis or any hemorrhage before ARDS is NOT H1N1 except in extremely rare cases of co-morbidity or sloppy intubation or sloppy ventilation management.
Hemorrhage in the first 5 days of infection, not intubation, is not likely H1N1.
The slides from Mexico are post mortem and after many days of intubation.
