A total of 882 people have fallen ill with measles in Ukraine over the past week, one child has died of complications from the disease, the Public Health Center of the Health Ministry of Ukraine reports.

?Since the start of the year, 24,027 people have contracted measles: 9,682 adults and 14,345 children. Also, 12 people have died of complications from the disease: eight children and four adults,? reads the report.

In a follow-up on the measles outbreak in Ukraine, the Center for Public Health of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine reported an additional 755 cases in the past week, bringing the total to 28,185 this year. The death tally remains at 13.

This represents a slight decrease in the incidence of measles since last week (8.2 percent). A breakdown in the cases is as follows: 11,437 adults and 16,748 children, Outbreak News Today reports.

Cases are distributed among the different cities: Lviv (only 5 451 people: 1 715 adults and 3 737 children), Transcarpathian (total 2 932 people: 545 adults and 2 387 children), Ivano-Frankivsk (total 2 673 people: 763 adults and 1 910 children), Odesa (only 2,188 people: 1,133 adults and 1,075 children), Kyiv (only 1,933 people: 1,192 adults and 741 children) and Ternopil (only 1,489 people: 576 adults and 913 children) regions...

Ukraine accounts for more than half of measles cases in European region in H1


The number of cases of measles in the European region during January-June of 2018 was 41,000, with more than half of them ? 56% ? occurring in Ukraine, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.

"Ukraine has been the hardest hit, with over 23,000 people affected; this accounts for over half of the regional total," the report says.

Not counting Ukraine, countries of the European region where the number of people infected during the reporting period that exceeded 1,000 people included Serbia (4,954), France (2,579), Georgia (2,130), Italy (2,020), Russia (1,396) and Greece (1,128). The total is 4,207 people, or 34.65% of the total number of cases in the European region. In all the countries listed above, deaths related to measles incidence were documented.

According to the monthly reports of EU countries, at least 37 people have already died of measles this year, 14 of them in Serbia, and 13 in Ukraine...

3-year-old child dies due to measles in Lviv region
It is the second death of a child in Lviv region and the 14th in Ukraine this year

On October 1, in Lviv regional infectious hospital, a three-year-old boy died due to measles. Natalya Tymko, the doctors ? epidemiologist of this hospital claimed this as ZAXID.NET reported.

It is stated that a boy lived at Zhovkovsky area, Lviv region and was hospitalized two weeks ago. The disease caused the complication in the form of the inflammation in the brain (encephalitis). The doctors could not save the child.

Oleg Kogut, the director of Lviv regional lab center claimed that the boy was vaccinated against measles.

It is the second death of a child in Lviv region this year. In April, a three-year-old girl died from the complications caused by measles.

Lviv region is a leader in the number of the people sickened with measles, 6,310 cases, including 1,964 adults and 4,346 children, were spotted. The second place is occupied by Zakarpattia with 3,126 cases...

Since the beginning of September, 28 children got sick with measles in one of the Vinnytsia region schools. Tetiana Bondarenko, the Head of Disease Treatment and Prevention for Children of Health Department of Vinnytsia Regional State Administration claimed this as BBC Ukraine reported.

The measles outbreak is connected with the fact that the parent refuse from the vaccination. According to Bondarenko, all the sick children were not vaccinated or did not have the follow-up vaccination.

"In the region, there are enough vaccines for the children's protective vaccination coverage," she noted.

It is reported that the incidence of measles in Vinnytsia region increased since the beginning of a school year. 83 cases of the measles, including 71 cases involving children were spotted in the region during a week.

Earlier it was reported that as of September 12, 30,744 persons have been sickened with measles since the beginning of 2018...

The majority of people are sick in the regions, where the coverage with the scheduled vaccine is the lowest.
