Health Ministry: Flu, pneumonia kill 507 people in Ukraine

A total of 507 people have died of flu and flu-like illnesses in Ukraine as of late on Dec. 15, the Ukrainian Health Ministry has reported.

Six people have died of flu and its complications (pneumonia) in the past 24 hours, the ministry said.

Since the outbreak of the epidemic, over 2.69 million people have contracted flu and respiratory infections, including 83,137 people over the past 24 hours.

A total of 156,272 people have been hospitalized since the start of the epidemic (October 29). Of those hospitalized, 123,769 people have been discharged from hospital.

The epidemic threshold has already been exceeded in Vinnytsia, Volyn, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia, Kirovohrad, Luhansk, Mykolaiv, Poltava, Sumy and Cherkasy regions, as well as in Crimea and in the city of Sevastopol.

This is not what the last MOH release said. The journalist is mis-aligning his columns. The 3,730 was the hospitalization count for the one day, and the 114 was the total number in ICU. Only 11 were on respirators.

This was using the December 14th MOH release.

I'm actually not sure Ukraine has the ICU capacity to put 3,730 patients in the ICU - the higest that count got during the outbreak so far was about 400. Ditto for 114 respirators - the highest that count got was about 50.

I started to wonder: is the 151,000+ hospitalizations mentioned the total number hospitalized in Ukraine for ALL ILLNESSES and DISEASES ?

Almost. Anything flu-like or respiratory. So they probably are not counting heart attacks, say, but anything acute or febrile counts.

That number may also be just an estimate - I'm not sure it's an exact count. I don't think any country can, or is even trying to count cases, that accurately. And judging by the fact that far less than 1% are in ICU, they seem to be hospitalizing milder cases as a precaution or a method of isolation. Either that or their hospitalization estimate is just too high.

Exact counting could be done if the have a centralized computing system, i. e. : every patient hospitalized register directly with MoH -
or its also thinkable that they might have developed good administrative routines reporting
