A CHARITY has been put on high alert over the spread of bird flu.
Concerns were raised following the confirmed outbreak of the disease at a Bernard Matthews farm in Holton, Suffolk, where 160,000 turkeys have been slaughtered.
As yet there have been no reports of H5N1 Asian virus at the Swan Rescue headquarters and treatment centre at Cuckoo Weir Island in South Meadow Lane, Eton, but staff are taking extra care. Wendy Hermon, the centre coordinator, said: ?We have been more vigilant for signs of bird flu recently, but we have had no reports of concerns so far.
?It is obviously a concern that avian flu has reached this country and we are all very worried about it, but we have no concerns for any of swans here and hopefully it will stay that way.
?Since last year all our rescuers are aware of the signs to look out for and have been told to be careful. We are working very closely with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) but until we are told otherwise we are carrying on as normal.?
