Nurses in West Midlands to receive flu pandemic training

* Published: 23 March 2009 11:01

A comprehensive e-learning and DVD training package to prepare health workers for a pandemic flu outbreak has been launched.

The package ? the first of its kind developed in the UK - will support training for thousands of staff in hospitals, GP practices and care homes across the West Midlands, in readiness for a predicted worldwide flu pandemic.

Susan Stokes, associate director of public health for NHS South Birmingham, who led the project, said: 'It is vitally important that all frontline staff in all healthcare and social care settings understand what a flu pandemic is, what the likely impact on them and their organisation will be, and what they can do to help manage and lessen the adverse effects.

'By knowing the facts and by working through interactive scenarios, our staff will be much better placed to help themselves and the public when a pandemic eventually arrives.'

The training package ? targeted at all levels of front-line staff - was commissioned by the region's PCTs, supported by NHS West Midlands, and put together by the Health Protection Agency in the West Midlands.

The package was premiered on 17 March at Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre. The training will be cascaded down in the coming months to frontline staff in PCTs, hospital trusts, mental health trusts and local authority social care organisations.
