Norovirus outbreaks at Derriford and Torbay hospitals

A highly contagious virus which causes vomiting and diarrhoea has closed wards at two hospitals in Devon.

The norovirus outbreak has prompted Torbay Hospital and Derriford Hospital in Plymouth to urge people who have any symptoms not to visit patients.

Three wards have been closed to new admissions at Torbay Hospital and two are closed at Derriford.

Both hospitals said infection control teams were reviewing the situation on a daily basis.

Two die after suffering from Novovirus bug at Paisley hospital

May 11 2012

TWO people have died after suffering from sickness and diarrhoea thought to be the winter vomitting bug, Novovirus at the Royal Alexandria Hospital in Paisley.

Officials at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said today that the deaths were caused by underlying medical conditions.

Six wards at the hospital have now been closed to new patients in a bid to contain the virus.

Twenty-six patients are showing symptoms of the bug but none of those affected are giving cause for concern. Infection control measures are in place.

Two more patients suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting thought to be the Norovirus bug have died in hospital.

Four people have so far died at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, Renfrewshire, following two deaths on Friday.

A spokesman for the health board said: "Our thoughts and sympathies are with the patients' families at this difficult time."

Eight wards have been closed at the hospital and 34 patients are said to be showing symptoms of the bug.

NHS Dumfries and Galloway

15 May 2012 at 13:00

NHS Dumfries and Galloway continues to implement full infection control measures in DGRI with regard to the norovirus or "winter vomiting bug" which has affected several patients and a number of wards.

Currently five wards at the hospital - 6, 9, 10, 14 and 18 remain closed to new admissions and patient transfers. Two other wards - ward 4 and ward 7 - have also been affected but remain operating normally.

Ward 12 has re-opened and Wards 10 and 14 may be scheduled for re-opening on Wednesday this week. A number of patients in Midpark Hospital and Annan Hospital have also shown signs of the symptoms and are being closely monitored.

A total of 95 patients and 53 staff have been affected since the outbreak began on 4 May.

Ward visiting restrictions remain in place for the closed wards and relatives are asked not to travel to visit unless absolutely necessary and especuially if they themselves are suffering symptoms.

Where circumstances are such that relatives and visitors are concerned about the need to visit loved ones, they are advised to contact the ward concerned for advice before coming to the hospital.

Members of the public are asked to adhere to the advice about handwashing and to use the hand hygene equipment in the ward.

The hospital's Outbreak Control Team is continuing to monitor the situation closely throughout each day and is meeting daily to review the position.

According to Dr Martin Connor, Consultant Microbiologist who chairs the Outbreak Control Meetings:

" Norovirus is currently prevalent in our local communities and what we are seeing in our hospitals is a reflection of what is happening out there in the community and elsewhere in Scotland. Our staff are working hard to deal with the outbreak and its effects on our patients and we are implementing all appropriate infection control procedures. Because we know it is in the community we are stressing the importance of avoiding visiting the affected wards in the hospital and especially not to visit if any member of the public or their families are showing symptoms of the illness. The actions taken to date have enabled us to re-open Ward 12 for admissions and transfers and as we continue to make progress in dealing with the outbreak we hope to be able to re-open two further wards tomorrow."

Two more wards shut at Paisley hospital after outbreak of norovirus which has claimed four lives

May 15 2012

TWO more wards at a hospital have been closed to new patients because of an outbreak of a bug thought to be the norovirus.

Eight wards at Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley are shut because of an increase in the number of people showing symptoms of the bug.

Last week two people suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting died in the hospital.

The virus is believed to have been a contributory factor in the deaths of two more patients.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said there were now 24 people with diarrhoea and vomiting in the hospital.
...
Meanwhile, visitors to two Highland hospitals have been asked to restrict their visits because of the bug.

NHS Highland said there had been an increase in the number of cases of diarrhoea and vomiting.

Raigmore Hospital in Inverness has two wards closed to new admissions, while a ward at Caithness General has also been shut, with visitors asked not to come.

-------------------------------------------
Guidance for patients and visitors to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

As of today (Monday 14th May 2012) eight inpatient wards at the hospital are not admitting new patients after an increase in the number of patients with symptoms of diarrhoea or vomiting - thought to be Norovirus.

Norovirus is particularly prevalent virus common in the community and healthcare settings. Typically it has a sudden onset and can spread quickly and therefore we would urge relatives and any visitors who have experienced any symptoms of diarrhoea or vomiting within the last forty-eight hours not to visit the hospital. We would also ask that visitors are restricted to close family and friends whenever possible due to the current situation.

Strict infection control measures are in place throughout the hospital and we are reminding hospital visitors of the importance of hand hygiene when entering and leaving hospital premises.

Anyone with a planned hospital appointment or admission to the RAH should attend as normal.

Two more Royal Alexandra Hospital norovirus patients die

Another two patients being treated for diarrhoea and vomiting at a hospital in the west of Scotland have died.

It brings the number of deaths among patients with norovirus symptoms at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley in the past week to six.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said the latest deaths were not caused by the bug and the patients had serious underlying medical conditions.
The infection has led to the closure of several hospital wards across Scotland.

The Health Protection Scotland agency has begun an evaluation of the preparedness and management for norovirus across Scotland.

Of the previous four deaths, norovirus was only identified as a contributory factory in one case.
