Pressures on the NHS have ?escalated rapidly? over the festive period with hospitals experiencing significant bed shortages, a leading doctor has warned.

Dr Nick Scriven, president of the Society for Acute Medicine (SAM), said many hospitals reported more than 99 per cent capacity in the week before Christmas.

He said services are being placed under significant strain as they enter the new year and called for non-urgent operations to be postponed until at least the end of January...

Escalation of this now with chaos in England, tv and newspapers full of it today.

Here you go, sorry x :

At least 16 hospitals have declared major incidents and Dr Richard Fawcett, whose Twitter profile lists him as a consultant at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, apologised via Twitter for "third world conditions" in his hospital department.

Bosses said they had been forced into the move as patients were experiencing long waits in A&E and being left on trolleys in corridors because there were no beds available.
Some ambulance services have even started asking 999 callers with less serious problems to make their own way to hospital so they can prioritise the most life-threatening calls.

In week 52, overall assessment is yellow (normal season activity). Seasonal influenza is having a moderate impact on the population. There is continuing evidence of increasing secondary care pressure based on virological detections of influenza.
Community circulation of influenza prompted the issue of a CMO letter in week 50 advising that GPs may prescribe antivirals.
