UK heat wave kills around 650 people in nine days: report
London: Britain's first prolonged heat wave in seven years has taken the country by surprise, with rails buckling, shops selling out of electric fans, and scientists estimating the surge in temperature could have caused hundreds of premature deaths.
After a washout summer in 2012 and the coldest spring for over 50 years, temperatures have soared across the country due to a northward shift in the high-altitude jetstream, prompting several authorities to issue public warnings over the heat.
Figures released by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine on Thursday estimated about 650 people may have died prematurely due to the heat over the past nine days, producing data based on deaths during previous heat waves.

Ben ArmstrongAn estimated 650 people may have died prematurely due to the current heatwave in England, according to research by Professor Ben Armstrong.
Figures produced by Prof Armstrong for the Times looked at the number of premature deaths attributable to heat in England for 6 -14 July 2013. The estimate was calculated using a model published in 2011 research from Prof Armstrong and colleagues that used region specific estimates of risk due to heat for the period 1993-2006*.
Prof Armstrong, an epidemiological statistician at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said: ?Our previous studies have shown that as temperatures rise above a certain threshold, the risk of death increases. Using the same model, we estimate that the current heatwave has caused the premature deaths of 650 people.
?The excess is likely to have been overwhelmingly among the elderly, especially those over 75, some of which may have been among people who would have died just a few weeks later if there had been no heatwave.?
The estimated 650 deaths have a confidence interval of 540-760. Download Prof Armstrong?s full calculations (PDF, 389KB).

Weather: A&E Admissions Rise In UK Heatwave
Experts estimate that hundreds of people may already have died in the hot weather, based on figures from previous UK heatwaves.9:37pm UK, Thursday 18 July 2013
Hospitals have reported a rise in A&E admissions as Britain's 30C heatwave continues.
Doctors at North Middlesex University Hospital said they have treated people for severe dehydration, heatstroke and breathing difficulties.
In Plymouth, the Derriford Hospital urged people to take extra care after heat-related admissions soared.
A level three health warning has been put in place by the Met Office in London, the South East, the West Midlands, and the South West due to the unusually high temperatures.
