Colchester General Hospital's urgent treatment centre temporarily shut to new patients after infection control scare
Parts of the hospital were closed to patients yesterday (November 17)

A spokesperson for East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Trust, who operate Colchester Hospital, said: "Thank you to all our patients and staff for their support yesterday afternoon when we had to temporarily close one clinical area at Colchester Hospital, the urgent treatment centre, to new patients.
"This was because of an infection control issue. The centre is now fully open (opened at 7am this morning)."
Dr Meera Chand, UKHSA Director of Clinical and Emerging Infection said: “Individuals who have travelled recently and report illness are routinely assessed by NHS clinicians for a variety of infectious diseases.”
The UKHSA said it was for Colchester hospital to comment on hospital infection control issues. Colchester hospital said it was the UKHSA's responsibility.

COLCHESTER hospital bosses were forced to close its urgent treatment department in response to an emergency “infection control issue”.

The hospital department was closed from mid-afternoon yesterday until 7am today as a deep clean of the facility was carried out.
An East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust spokeswoman said the department was shut for any new patients during this period.
She said: “We had to temporarily close one clinical area at Colchester Hospital, the urgent treatment centre, to new patients.
“This was because of an infection control issue.
“We carried out a deep clean which we do every day in the hospital.
“We closed the centre so we could deal with the issue and care for the patients in there.”
Eyewitness Vincent Donaldson, 65, told the Gazette the “very worrying” scenes saw people on medical trollies scattered across the site.

Health officials are investigating a potential Ebola case in Colchester, after a patient with suspected symptoms returned to Britain from Africa, where a strain of the deadly virus is circulating in Uganda.
On Wednesday, part of Colchester Hospital in Essex was closed to new patients amid concerns that a patient with a travel history to Africa was developing early symptoms of Ebola, a deadly hemorrhagic fever.
The Telegraph understands that officials at the UK Health Security Agency are testing the patient for a range of diseases as part of routine infection control protocol that kicks in when suspected cases emerge in travellers.
