An outbreak of highly pathogenic bird flu has been confirmed in pheasants in Powys, the second case in Wales since the mandatory housing order was lifted.

The Welsh government said on Thursday evening (27 April) the disease was found in pheasants at a farm near Newtown.

Bird flu: Ringstead case confirmed in captive birds

A case of bird flu has been confirmed at a farm in Northamptonshire a week after government restrictions were lifted across the UK.

The Animal Plant and Health Agency (APHA) said a 3km (1.9 mile) controlled zone had been put in place around the small unit near Ringstead.

The birds are due to be "humanely culled", APHA said.

Restrictions covering most of the UK, which ordered owners to keep poultry inside, were lifted on 18 April...​

A 2-mile (3km) protection zone and a 6-mile (10km) surveillance zone have been put in place around the area after the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said the H5N1 virus "was confirmed in commercial poultry" at a site near Cantley.

All the birds on the affected premises will be humanely killed, Defra said.
