Beds in NI hospitals face increasing flu pressure
H1N1 virus There are more than 200 cases of H1N1 infection in Northern Ireland

Thirty three of the 77 beds in Northern Ireland's hospital intensive care and high dependency units are occupied by people who have flu and flu like illnesses.

The figure was revealed by the Chief Executive of the Health and Social Care Board...

...The Health Minister Michael McGimpsey said he had been informed by the board that they will be increasing the number of critical care beds.

"Up to 40 extra beds will be made available for patients and there is scope to provide more if necessary," he said...

John Compton said the number of patients requiring beds in these units has increased.

More than 200 people are currently being treated for the virus...

Flu cases take over NI's intensive care


An increasing number of beds in intensive care and high dependency units are being designated to treating flu sufferers.


Elective surgery has been postponed for one week as a result to ensure hospitals continue to meet the needs of intensive care patients.

40% of beds across Northern Ireland were occupied by patients suffering from flu and flu-like symptoms on Wednesday morning, Belfast Health and Social Care has confirmed.

Patients affected will be contacted directly by their hospital.

Board Chief Executive Mr John Compton explained that taken following advice from doctors in health trusts throughout Northern Ireland and the Public Health Agency.

He added that the surgery postponement represented a measured and appropriate response to specific service pressures, including increased rates of flu and flu like illness in the community.

MORE than 20 patients are now being treated for swine flu at hospitals in Coventry and Warwickshire.

Fourteen patients at George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton have been put into isolation.

Twelve are being treated in access-controlled side wards with suspected swine flu in the main hospital while two others have been confirmed as having the virus and are in the Intensive Care Unit.



Experts say the pace of the disease’s transmission has not yet peaked this winter.

Professor John Oxford, a leading virologist at St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Hospital, said: “This virus is not going to go away next week.

Dr Douglas Fleming, director of the Royal College of General Practitioners’ Research and Surveillance Centre, said: “This is a H1 virus and we know that spreads rapidly amongst children.“I personally don’t feel that we have quite reached the peak.”

Two more Merseyside women die from swine flu as GPs run out of vaccine

A DEVOTED school worker and a mum-of-two have died from suspected swine flu.

Julie Roberts, 45,who worked in Childwall schools, passed away on Monday morning suffering flu symptoms, most likely caused by the H1N1 strain.

And Hilary Robinson, 37, from Ormskirk, died on Christmas Eve from the illness.

Colleagues today paid tribute to Ms Roberts, who had worked at schools all around Liverpool, helping them with attendance.

It takes the known death toll in the region to eight.

And the ECHO can today reveal many GP surgeries and chemists in Merseyside have run out of flu vaccines.

Health bosses are desperately trying to free-up medics to look after the growing number of patients fighting for their lives with both swine flu and seasonal flu.
More than a thousand operations are being cancelled across Greater Manchester after hospitals declared a flu emergency.

Patients waiting for major operations – including heart surgery – were being urgently contacted and told they face a delay.

Emergencies and some minor procedures will still go ahead. There are usually 119 critical care beds in the region's hospitals. The freeze on ops is expected to provide enough doctors and nurses to staff more than 200 beds.

Latest figures show that 108 people are in critical care across the north west, up from 74 in critical care last week. Twelve people have already died in Greater Manchester.

An NHS North West spokesman said: “This is part of the escalation plans we have in place to respond to fluctuations in demand, so that we can make additional critical care beds available and ensure that there is sufficient critical care capacity for emergency cases.

All hospitals in Greater Manchester are affected, including Manchester Royal Infirmary, Wythenshawe Hospital, North Manchester General and the Royal Oldham.

Trafford General bosses have opened an extra 40 medical beds and doubled their critical care capacity to eight. They have cancelled the majority of their operations.

Morag Olsen, from the hospital, said: “We hope people will appreciate that we have to prioritise critically ill patients.

“We have well-established plans for increasing the number of critical care beds and medical beds to cope with unusually high levels of demand like this and these plans are now being implemented.

The Royal Bolton Hospital has postponed all non-life threatening operations this week as it cares for high numbers of patients who need to be admitted with urgent medical conditions. The hospital has also opened 65 extra beds including two intensive care beds bringing the total to ten. The government has admitted some parts of England are short of flu vaccines and is considering bringing in more stocks from Europe.

A Department of Health spokeswoman insisted there was no national shortage but admitted some areas were experiencing ‘ local supply issues.’

Health minister Andrew Lansley, on a visit to Greater Manchester, said the NHS had the situation under control. He said: “We are concerned but we are prepared for it. I do not think it is fair to say that hospitals are at breaking point."

Welsh hospitals running out of flu vaccine as demand surges Jan 6 2011

WALES? largest hospital has run out of flu vaccine and GP practices are struggling to meet demand as patients and NHS staff clamour for protection.

The shortages come after the number of cases of flu rose sharply throughout the UK in the past month. Public health experts and the Welsh Assembly Government have repeatedly urged at-risk groups to have the seasonal flu jab.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, which runs the University Hospital in Wales, in Cardiff, and nearby Llandough Hospital, last night said it was awaiting fresh supplies of the vaccine. Some 400 staff members were immunised over Christmas as the number of flu cases in Wales soared.

The situation in other Welsh hospitals was unclear last night.

But the Western Mail understands a number of GP practices have also been forced to order more vaccine following a surge in demand.

Dr David Bailey, chair of the Welsh GP committee, said the only form of the vaccine now available is the more expensive sub-dermal version, which costs twice as much.

Dr Bailey said the original orders for vaccines had been made in May and June based on the number of people vaccinated the previous winter.

?The Government used to hold a contingency stock but it often ended up with 50,000 vaccines going out of date,? he said.

Vaccine take-up rates among the over-65s at the end of 2010 had risen from 58.8% to 60.2%; from 40.3% to 41.9% for younger people in at-risk groups and from 6.5% to 18.4% for pregnant women.

The search to find fresh supplies of the vaccine come as figures last night showed a slight decrease in the flu consultation rate, caused by the closure of GP practices over the Christmas period.

The flu consultation rate, for the week ending January 2 was 89.2 per 100,0000 compared to 92.14 for the previous week.

But flu-related calls to NHS Direct Wales and to out-of-hours GP services remained high over the festive period.

Hospitals told to prepare for flood of flu patients

HOSPITALS across Greater Manchester have been told to free up beds to make way for a patients requiring treatment for flu.

The advice comes from the region?s strategic health authority, NHS North West, who are reporting a surge in serious cases where sufferers are requiring treatment on critical care wards.

The authority, who have now ordered hospitals not to disclose the number of patients they are treating for the condition, have confirmed during Christmas week there were 74 flu patients in critical care in the region, with 27 of those in the Greater Manchester area.

"It isn't clear yet whether the current flu season has peaked,?a spokesperson for NHS North West said on Tuesday. ?But we need to make sure that we are able to cope if we continue to see a significant rise in the number of patients with seasonal flu who need critical care."

Putting the threat in to context though, last week the Royal College of GPs said cases of all types of flu had risen to 124 per 100,000 people in the UK. Its latest figures are expected to be released today (Thursday).

Northern Ireland swine flu patients 'are more ill'

The doctor in charge of acute hospital services in Belfast has said there are fewer critical cases of swine flu this year, but those affected are more ill.

Dr Patricia Donnelly said although critical care units were busy, beds were still available in Belfast and across Northern Ireland.

She said in Belfast there were five patients with swine flu in critical care out of a total of 33.

Across NI the number was fluctuating between 25% and 35% of critical beds.
She said there was only one child with swine flu in critical care and another child with a different type of flu.
"A smaller number of patients are affected this time, but those who were affected definitely are sicker," Dr Donnelly said.

Nuneaton ex-soldier, 41, dies of swine flu (Warwickshire)

A NUNEATON ex-soldier, 41, has died from swine flu - five days after admitting himself to hospital.

Former publican Andy Martin, who served as a soldier during the Gulf War, succumbed to the virus Sunday while being treated in the intensive care unit at the town’s George Eliot Hospital.

He is the second local victim of swine flu, following the death on Christmas Day of Keresley businessman Paul Stokes, whose funeral was being held today

Mum, 50, dies of swine flu
A mum-of-one from near Leyland has died of swine flu.

It's emerged that Jennifer Moorby, 50, from Hoghton, died at Royal Preston Hospital on December 30 of the killer bug.

Jennifer, known as Jen, died after being admitted with symptoms of the illness.

The cause of her death has been confirmed by her devastated family, including her landscape gardener husband David, who were too upset to comment.

The UK Health Protection Agency released a set of 38 English sequences on 2010-01-04 at GenBank, but not from the current 2010 severe wave. These 38 HA and NA publications are delayed more than one year, covering September 10 to November 25, 2009. No sequences are included from the pandemic wave currently circulating.

65% of the English sequences are cross-linked with HA syn413K and NA syn407V. 225E occurs in 5 sequences and 225G in 2 sequences. Person to person transmission of oseltamivir-resistance via NA H275Y is noted within a hematology unit that encompasses 15 of these 38 sequences. All but one of the anti-viral resistant sequences are on a cross-linked background. One simple drug resistant sequence carries 225G on the cross-linked background.

The drug-resistant 15 are unremarkable, but for their simplicity. The 225G sequences and a representative sample of the anti-viral resistant sequences is presented after the complete listing of TmX sequence names sorted by date.

York Hospital sets up 'special area' for flu admissions

York Hospital has set up "a special area" for flu patients after a sharp rise in the number of people suffering from the illness.

The hospital trust said it was treating 30 patients who had "severe symptoms and complications related to flu".

York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust deputy chief executive Mike Proctor said this was a "notable increase" compared with last winter...

...Mr Proctor said they had an adequate supply of flu vaccine at the hospital...

He added that two people had died from the H1N1 virus in December.

Mr Proctor said a number of non-emergency operations had been postponed at the hospital

"The hospital is under a lot of pressure at the moment," he added.

Flu deaths hit 50 this winter, Health Protection Agency announces
Eleven more people have died from flu across the UK, taking the total to 50, the Health Protection Agency has announced.

Of these, 45 died with swine flu (H1N1) and five with another strain, flu type B.

The deaths are mostly among children and young adults, with five cases in the under-fives and eight cases among those aged five to 14.

Professor Sally Davies, the interim chief medical officer for England, confirmed today that the government is releasing its 12.7m doses of the Pandemrix swine flu vaccine.



The NHS is preparing to expand the number of beds available for a highly specialised treatment that is often seen as a last resort. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) helps patients whose lungs or heart are not working normally and uses an artificial lung to oxygenate blood outside the body.
As of Christmas eve, 22 ECMO beds at seven hospitals were in use across UK, up from five beds in early December.
Another four beds are being arranged, with more planned to operate at hospitals that are cancelling operations.

In an attempt to stem the rising death toll, the NHS will expand the number of beds available for a highly specialised flu treatment, which is often seen as a last resort.

This will ensure that those patients who are stable enough to leave ECMO can move into intensive care beds.

A spokeswoman for the National Specialised Commissioning Team said: 'This very specialist, high risk, procedure is being provided by highly trained specialists at seven hospitals.

'The NHS continues to monitor the situation carefully and we are taking further steps to increase the number of beds available.

'For instance, hospitals providing respiratory ECMO have been asked to take appropriate measures, including postponing planned cardiac surgery, in order to maximise capacity for patients needing ECMO.'
The spokeswoman added ECMO is 'only used as a matter of last resort in exceptional cases'.

Strategic health authorities (SHAs) have been asked to identify appropriate cardiac surgery centres (whose staff do not normally provide ECMO) which may be asked to provide a limited ECMO service.

Pandemrix (H1N1) influenza vaccine from the national stockpile is to be made available to GPs who need it to meet vaccination demands, interim chief medical officer Dame Sally Davies has announced.
At a media briefing today (6 January 2010), Dame Sally said that although she could not confirm that there is a shortage of the trivalent seasonal flu vaccine she believes that there may be a mismatch between the spread of the vaccine across GP practices and areas of demand.
David Salisbury, director of immunisation at the Department of Health, said that there are currently 12.7 million doses of the Pandemrix vaccine available in the stockpile.

Other deaths linked to the virus included a devoted school worker and mother-of-two Julie Roberts, 45, who worked in Childwall schools, on Merseyside.

In the same area, Hilary Robinson, 37, from Ormskirk, died on Christmas Eve.

Further fatalities revealed yesterday included a mother-of-one who died of the virus in Preston, Lancashire. Jennifer Moorby, 50, at Royal Preston Hospital on December 30, after being admitted with symptoms of the illness.

It was revealed yesterday that a father-of-two died on Christmas Day after suffering from flu-like symptoms.

Kevin Hall, 43, an orthopaedic nurse practitioner from Killingworth, Newcastle upon Tyne, had never had a day off sick before the deadly bug took hold.
