Enfield Council's cabinet member for health and social care, Cllr Alev Cazimoglu, said: ‘We are following national public health guidance to manage the situation, protecting residents and limiting further spread.

‘The current outbreak has mainly affected children and some have required additional care with a short stay in hospital.'

Enfield Council and its health partners are asking residents to check whether they have had both doses of the vaccine known as MMRV or MMR.

Dr Vanessa Saliba, consultant epidemiologist at UKHSA: ‘Measles is a nasty illness for any child, but for some it can lead to long term complications and tragically death but is so easily preventable with two doses of the MMRV vaccine.'

UKHSA data shows London currently accounts for 63.5% of measles cases in England with over a quarter (26%) in the West Midlands.

More new cases of measles have been recorded in north London, amid a recent outbreak of the disease.

Figures released Thursday by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) showed there had been 16 new cases in Enfield in the past week. The figures also show it has spread to nearby Haringey, where 10 new cases were recorded.

It brings the total number of recorded measles cases in London to 88 since the beginning of the year, with the majority of cases occurring in children under 10 years old...

Measles cases have risen in parts of north London.

Enfield is at the centre of the highest figures so far in 2026.
From January 1 to February 23, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) recorded 59 laboratory confirmed cases of measles in Enfield—more than a third of all cases in England so far this year.
This marks a rise of nine cases on the previous week’s total and makes Enfield the area with the highest count nationally.
The borough’s total is more than double that of the next highest area, Birmingham, which recorded 28 cases during the same period.

The latest data shows that London is the worst-affected region, with 104 of the 158 total cases so far in 2026...

Measles cases are continuing to rise in England mainly driven by outbreaks in London and Birmingham, the latest figures show.

While more than 80% of cases since the start of the year have been seen in London and the West Midlands, all regions have reported at least one confirmed case, the update from the UK Health Security Agency said.

Since the start of January and 9 March, there have now been 235 confirmed measles cases in England.

Almost two thirds – 62% – of those have been in London, the figures show, with a further 22% in the West Midlands.

The epicentre of the London outbreak has been in the borough of Enfield in the north which has seen 80 confirmed cases so far with 15 cases in neighbouring Haringey.

In all Birmingham has seen 43 confirmed cases, UKHSA said.

More than 70% of all cases have been in children aged under 10 years. Officials in London had previously said around one in five cases were requiring hospital care.

There is a lag between reports of a potential case of measles and laboratory confirmation with current figures ‘likely to underestimate activity’, the latest report said.

Dr Yimmy Chow, UKHSA’s London region deputy director said: ‘We continue to see measles cases in north London, and while children remain unvaccinated, the risk of further spread is very real...

England measles epidemiology 2026

This report describes measles epidemiology in England from 1 January 2026.

Situational update

In 2024 there were 2,911 laboratory confirmed measles cases in England, the highest number of cases recorded annually, since 2012. In 2025, there were a total of 959 laboratory-confirmed measles cases. Data for 2023 to 2025 and historical data are available.

Between 1 January 2026 and 8 June 2026, there have been 736 laboratory confirmed measles cases reported in England, an increase of 106 cases since the last report on 25 May 2026 (Figures 1 and 2).

Summary

The number of laboratory-confirmed measles cases by month of symptom onset in 2026 to date are:
  • January: 106
  • February: 142
  • March: 142
  • April: 156
  • May: 182
  • June: 8 (to date)
The UKHSA data dashboard provides tabular data on the total number of cases by week of onset in 2026.

The majority (449 out of 736, 61%) of these cases were in children aged 10 years and under, and 34% (247 out of 736) were in young people and adults aged 15 years and over (Table 1). 55% (404 out of 736) of these cases have been in London, 18% (136 out of 736) in the West Midlands, and 10% (77 out of 736) in the North West. However, all regions have reported at least one confirmed case with symptom onset since January 2026. 85 upper tier local authorities (UTLAs) have reported at least one confirmed case with symptom onset since January 2026, with the highest numbers reported in Enfield (111 out of 736, 15%), Birmingham (79 out of 736, 11%) and Haringey and Islington with 49 each (49 out of 736, 7%) (Table 2a).

The vaccination status of all confirmed cases is published quarterly in the related health protection reports.

Two measles related deaths have been reported to date in 2026: one was an acute measles death in a child, and another is a death in a child due to late effects of measles. Information on historical measles-related deaths is available on the notifications and deaths webpage.

Recent activity

There have been 137 laboratory confirmed measles cases with symptom onset date in the 4 weeks since 11 May 2026. Data reporting lags have the greatest impact on the most recent 4 weeks and therefore the reported figures are likely to underestimate activity. London accounted for the highest proportion of these cases (46%, 63 out of 137). 15% (20 out of 137) of cases have been in the East of England, and 13% (18 out of 137) in the West Midlands. 42 UTLAs have reported at least one confirmed case with symptom onset since 11 May 2026, with the highest number of cases reported in Hertfordshire (n=19), Worcestershire (n=16), and Harrow (n=10) (Table 2b).

The data reporting lag has had the greatest impact on the most recent 4 weeks and therefore the reported figures are likely to underestimate activity. For this reason, these data points are represented by dotted lines.

Adult dies of measles as cases surge across England
It follows the deaths of two children just last month
Ella Pickover
Thursday 09 July 2026 11:13 BST

Health officials have announced the death of an adult from measles, marking a grim milestone as confirmed cases continue to climb across England.

The latest fatality follows the deaths of two children from the highly contagious virus in June.

Figures released by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reveal that 883 confirmed measles cases have been reported in England from the start of the year to 6 July.

A total of 959 confirmed cases were recorded in 2025.

The adult who died had an "underlying immunological problem", according to officials.

The UKHSA said that all regions of England have reported cases, with London accounting for over half (52 per cent), the West Midlands 17 per cent, and the North West 10 per cent...
