Five cases of bluetongue identified in county

Five cases of bluetongue have been identified in Shropshire livestock in the last week.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said one ewe was found to have the virus on Monday, while cases were confirmed in two cattle on 17 September, and a further two cattle on 19 September.

Bluetongue (BTV-3) is a virus transmitted by midge bites that affects cattle, sheep and goats​..

Total number of cases


The total number of BTV-3 cases in Great Britain for the 2025 to 2026 vector season (since July 2025) is 91. There have been:

• 87 cases in England
• 4 cases in Wales

The total number of BTV-8 cases in Great Britain for the 2025 to 2026 vector season (since July 2025) is one. This case was in England.

The location of all premises in Great Britain where one or more animals have tested positive by PCR to bluetongue serotype 3, serotype 8 or serotype 12 is available on the bluetongue case map.

1 October 2025 further update


Three new cases of BTV-3 in England were confirmed on 1 October 2025 following reports of suspicious clinical signs:

• one dairy cow in Derbyshire
• one cow in Devon
• one ram in Cornwall

Following the confirmation of bluetongue serotype 3 (BTV-3) at a premises in Monmouthshire, Wales, the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) for Wales has announced that a bluetongue temporary control zone (TCZ) has been put in place around the premises from Wednesday 1 October.

Four new cases of BTV-3 in England were confirmed on 30 September 2025 following reports of suspicious clinical signs:

• one spring born calf in Staffordshire
• one suckler cow in Cornwall
• one cow in Cornwall
• 2 cows in Staffordshire

One new case of BTV-3 was confirmed in 5 cattle in Staffordshire on 30 September 2025 following a non-negative pre-movement test.

One new case of BTV-3 in a suckler cow was confirmed in Powys, Wales on 30 September following reports of suspicious clinical signs.

One new case of BTV-3 was confirmed on 26 September 2025 following reports of suspicious clinical signs in one suckler cow in Monmouthshire, Wales.

One new case of BTV-3 was confirmed in one bovine in Powys, Wales, on 26 September 2025 following a non-negative post-movement test.

One case of bluetongue serotype 8 (BTV-8) was confirmed in a single sheep in Cornwall on 26 September 2025 following reports of suspicious clinical signs. Any movements on or off the premises will be traced and tested. No additional zones have been declared.

This is the first case of BTV-8 in the UK since 2008.

25 September 2025


7 new cases of BTV-3 were confirmed on 25 September 2025 following reports of suspicious clinical signs in:

• one bull in Greater Manchester
• one ewe in Devon
• two ewes in Kent
• one suckler cow in Derbyshire
• one recently calved cow in Cornwall
• one 3-month old calf in Cornwall
• one suckler cow in Cheshire

One new case of BTV-3 was confirmed in one bovine in Wiltshire on 25 September 2025 following a non-negative pre-movement test.

Restricted zone


The restricted zone for bluetongue was extended to cover all of England on 1 July 2025. You can now move animals within England without a specific bluetongue licence or pre-movement testing.

You will need a specific licence to freeze germinal products (semen, ova and embryo) anywhere in England and testing will be required. Keepers will be responsible for the cost of sampling, postage and testing. Further detail can be found in the declaration.

There have been 212 cases of bluetongue in Great Britain in the 2025 bluetongue season (since July 2025). In:

England, there have been 198 cases of bluetongue - including 190 cases of only BTV-3, 1 case of only BTV-8 and 7 cases with both BTV-3 and BTV-8
Wales, there have been 14 cases of BTV-3

There have been no cases in Scotland.

Two cows have been culled as vets continue to investigate the first suspected case of bluetongue virus (BTV-3) on the island of Ireland.

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (Daera) said its surveillance indicated the presence of the disease in two cows at an abattoir near Bangor, County Down.​..

There have been no cases in Scotland.

Total number of cases (premises)​

There have been 556 cases of bluetongue serotype 3 (BTV-3) in the UK in the 2026 to 2027 bluetongue season. A case is defined as a premises on which at least 1 bluetongue positive animal has been diagnosed. This includes:

• 527 cases in England
• 21 cases in Wales
• 8 cases in Scotland
• 0 cases in Northern Ireland

There have been no cases of bluetongue serotype 8 (BTV-8) in the 2026 to 2027 bluetongue season.
Where animals with suspect clinical signs are reported, Defra funds the cost of diagnostic testing for up to 3 affected animals.
The bluetongue case map shows the location of all premises in Great Britain where one or more animals have tested positive by PCR for bluetongue.

21 August 2026​

19 new cases of BTV-3 were confirmed in England on 21 August 2026. There were cases in Devon, Cornwall, Herefordshire and West Yorkshire. Of these, 16 cases involved sheep, 3 involved cattle and one was a mixed farm. All the premises were tested following reports of suspicious clinical signs.
4 new cases of BTV-3 in sheep were confirmed in Wales on 21 August 2026. There were cases in Powys, Wrexham, Gwynedd and Pembrokeshire. All cases were in sheep. All the premises were tested following reports of suspicious clinical signs.
2 new cases of BTV-3 in sheep were confirmed in Scotland on 21 August 2026. Both cases were in Dumfries and Galloway. Both cases were in sheep. Both premises were tested following reports of suspicious clinical signs.
All cases presented with clinical signs typical of those seen in recent cases.
