Measles cases in West Midlands highest since 1990s

The number of people with measles in the West Midlands is at its highest since at least the mid-1990s, health officials say.

Figures show the area had 133 cases since 1 October, the highest number since the two-dose measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) jab was rolled out.

There were also 96 "likely" cases in the same time period, data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) shows.

In England, there were 167 confirmed cases between January and October 2023...​

Birmingham Children’s Hospital has been inundated with the highest number in decades of youngsters with measles, health officials say.

Within the last month, there have been more than 50 children in need of treatment, the highest it has seen in years.

It comes as UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) figures show the West Midlands had at least 167 laboratory confirmed cases with a further 88 likely cases.

A low vaccination rate of about 5% has been attributed to the rise.​..

The latest number of laboratory confirmed measles cases in England have been published by the UKHSA in an updated epidemiological overview.

From 1 October 2023, there have been 347 laboratory confirmed measles cases reported in England, with 127 of these cases confirmed in January 2024.

75% (260/347) of these cases have been in the West Midlands, 13% (46/347) in London and 7% (24/347) in Yorkshire and The Humber.

The majority (233/347, 67%) of these cases are in children under the age of 10 and 24% (85/347) in young people and adults over the age of 15.

Dr Vanessa Saliba, UKHSA Consultant Epidemiologist, said:

The ongoing measles outbreak in the West Midlands remains a concern. MMR vaccine coverage has been falling for the last decade with 1 out of 10 children starting school in England not protected and so there is a real risk that this outbreak could spread to other towns and cities.

Measles is a nasty illness for most children and for some can be serious, but it is completely preventable. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and your children. If you or your child are not up to date with your two doses of MMR vaccine please contact your GP to catch-up now.​

The data published in this epidemiological overview covers the dates between 1 October, 2023 and 23 January, 2024 and is currently provisional. Updates will be published every Thursday going forward.

Measles: First case in seven years confirmed in Northern Ireland

The Public Health Agency (PHA) has confirmed that a case of measles has been diagnosed in Northern Ireland.

The PHA said the case was confirmed in an adult who picked it up while travelling.

Close contacts have been notified and "all appropriate public health actions are being undertaken".

It is the first case of measles in Northern Ireland for seven years. Cases have been rising across Great Britain and Ireland in recent weeks.

The last confirmed case of measles in Northern Ireland was in 2017.​..

​A measles outbreak has been declared in Gwent, Public Health Wales has announced.

The organisation has said it is working with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board to investigate two further measles cases identified in Gwent, which brings the overall number to four cases.

All four cases are linked to attendance at a healthcare setting on March 21.

Public Health Wales (PHW) has identified contacts of the cases and has said it is providing patients with advice on what action to take, as well as signs and symptoms of measles...

Measles cases in London now in line with West Midlands

A rise in measles cases in London has brought the capital in line with the number of cases recorded in the West Midlands – the initial hotspot for the virus.

This comes as the rise in cases appears to be plateauing across the country and as a national catch-up campaign has increased vaccination uptake over recent months.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) announced last week that measles cases in London accounted for 63 out of a national total of 190 cases recorded since 4 March.

The cases in London make up 33% of the total, while 35% (67) cases were recorded in the West Midlands and 11% (21 cases) in the East Midlands during the same time period.

Since 1 October 2023, 934 measles cases have been recorded in England. The number of cases had increased from 17 in October 2023 to 40 in November, to 153 in December, and to 269 in January 2024. In February, a slight decline was seen, with 231 cases recorded, and the latest figures for March saw 224 cases....​

​More than 1,000 cases of measles have been confirmed in England since the current outbreak began, figures show.

All regions have reported cases in the past few weeks, though prevalence of the virus in the West Midlands – where many of the first infections were detected – has now stabilised.

A total of 1,023 laboratory confirmed cases of measles in England have been reported since October 1 2023, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

Of these, 811 have been reported so far this year, well above the number for the whole of 2023 (368).​..

London has overtaken the West Midlands with the largest number of measles cases, raising concerns that the capital could become a hotspot for the disease.

Over the last six months, a dramatic increase has been reported in the number of infections, with 62 of the 195 cases being based in the capital since 11 March. This is in comparison to just 11 cases in the whole of March last year.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has warned that England is seeing the highest number of infections in a decade, with vaccination rates among children consistently falling.

To prevent a major outbreak, a minimum of 95 per cent of the population needs to be vaccinated with the MMR jabs, yet millions of children under the age of 16 are not fully protected...​

86 more measles cases in last week with clusters in four places

There have been 86 laboratory confirmed measles cases in England in the last week, bringing the total confirmed since October 1, 2023 to 1,109, with London seeing the greatest number of new confirmed cases and clusters ongoing in the East Midlands and the North West.

In the 4 weeks since 11 March 2024, there have been 195 laboratory confirmed measles cases. 69 of these (35%) were reported from London, 62 (32%) from the West Midlands, and 23 (12%) from the East Midlands. Confirmed cases have been reported in all regions.

The majority (64%) of the cases were in children aged 10 years and under.

Dr Rob Verrecchia, UKHSA Health Protection Consultant, said: "We are continuing to see measles cases right across the country, with cases particularly high in London and the West Midlands. Measles is an extremely infectious disease, and it only takes one case to get into a community with low vaccination rates for measles to spread rapidly, especially in schools and nurseries, so it is vital that people are fully protected by two doses of the MMR vaccine.​..

Public health officials believe that measles is spreading in the community in Gwent with nine cases of measles now confirmed.

Measles case confirmed in north Wales

A case of measles has been identified in a person who attended a hospital in north Wales.

Public Health Wales (PHW) said the person, who lives in England, went to Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

It said close contacts of the case had been contacted and urged people to check their vaccination records.

The case comes about a month after an outbreak was declared in south-east Wales.​..

Experts have issued a stark warning to families of young cancer patients as more measles cases have been reported.

GPs have diagnosed more than 600 new suspected cases of the virus - which affects mainly young children and babies - in three weeks. Health experts say the outbreak started in Birmingham at the start of October, with the West Midlands currently seeing the biggest number of cases.

There have already been 1,749 lab-confirmed cases of measles since then, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) says, most of which (1,531) have been in 2024. This is more than four times the number of cases throughout 2023 in its entirety. You can see the suspected cases near you with our interactive map.​

Separate figures show that in the three weeks up to June 3, the UKHSA has received notifications of 627 suspected cases of measles from GPs in England and Wales. These are alerts that GPs are required to send to the UKHSA every time they diagnose a case of what they believe to be measles.

While these cases have not been confirmed in a laboratory, they show suspected infections in council areas and can provide an early warning of possible outbreaks. The figures show that Birmingham - where the current outbreak began - has had the most suspected cases overall with 382, including 22 in the last week.

Next is Manchester with 141 overall, including nine in the last three weeks, and then Leicester with 132 including 12 most recently. But Wandsworth in London has had the most suspected cases in the last three weeks with 23, including 10 in the week ending June 2, the latest data available.

Now the UKHSA has sent out letters to doctors around the country with guidance for chemo patients and others with weakened immune systems, who are at increased risk of catching the virus. Measles is rarely a serious illness but can cause serious complications in patients with compromised immunity such as pneumonitis or lung infections.​...

A child has died while nearly 2,500 people have been confirmed to have measles in the UK this year, health officials have revealed.

The once-eradicated disease is currently circulating, with 2,465 lab-confirmed cases so far this year up to September 9. In the last two weeks, 78 new cases have been confirmed, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).​

The vast majority of cases (61% - or 1,513) were in young children aged 10 or under. The UKHSA has now confirmed that a young person died from acute measles in the first quarter of this year, the first in England since the current outbreak began....
