Latest situation

Take action to prevent bird flu and stop it spreading. Be vigilant for signs of disease and report it to keep your birds safe.

Further update 5 November 2024

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N5 has been confirmed in commercial poultry at a premises near Hornsea, East Riding of Yorkshire, Yorkshire. All poultry on the infected premises will be humanely culled. A 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone has been put in place surrounding the premises.

Check if you’re in a bird flu disease zone on the map.

If you’re in a bird flu disease control zone you must follow the rules for that zone and check if you need a licence to move poultry, poultry by-products, eggs, material or mammals.

In line with World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) rules, this means Great Britain is no longer free from highly pathogenic avian influenza. Northern Ireland continues to have self-declared zonal freedom from highly pathogenic avian influenza.

Practicing good biosecurity at all times protects the health and welfare of your birds and for commercial keepers will help protect your business from HPAI and other diseases.

Find out what you can do to prevent bird flu and stop it spreading and how to spot and report it in poultry or other captive birds.

5 November 2024

All bird keepers are urged to remain vigilant and take action to protect their birds following a further increase in the avian influenza (‘bird flu’) risk levels in Great Britain.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N5 and H5N1 have been detected in wild birds in Great Britain this autumn.

The risk level of HPAI H5 in wild birds has increased from medium to high.

The risk level in poultry:
  • where good biosecurity is consistently applied at all times has increased from very low to low with low uncertainty
  • where there is suboptimal or poor biosecurity remains assessed as low but is heightened with high uncertainty
While findings of HPAI in wild birds during recent years have been dominated by the H5N1 virus strain, the finding of HPAI H5N5 was likely this season and follows previous findings in Great Britain and recent detections of the strain in continental Europe.

Further information on the evidence which supports these risk levels can be found in our risk and outbreak assessments.

All bird keepers must remain vigilant and practise stringent biosecurity to protect the health and welfare of their birds. Find out how to protect your birds in our biosecurity guidance.

New registration requirements for bird keepers in Great Britain

On 19 March the government announced new measures to help protect the poultry sector from bird flu.

The first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N5 of the current outbreak was confirmed in England on the 5 November 2024.

Whilst there have been no cases of HPAI confirmed in Wales or Scotland during this outbreak. In line with World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) rules, Great Britain is no longer free from highly pathogenic avian influenza.

No cases of HPAI have been confirmed in Northern Ireland this season and Northern Ireland continues to have WOAH self-declared zonal freedom from highly pathogenic avian influenza.

While HPAI H5N1 has been detected in wild birds in Great Britain there have been no detections of HPAI H5N1 in poultry or other captive birds this season.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 has been confirmed in commercial poultry at a premises near Rosudgeon, St. Ives, Cornwall. All poultry on the infected premises will be humanely culled. A 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone have been put in place surrounding the premises.

Further to the recent detections of HPAI H5N5 in both wild and kept birds in England, this is the first confirmation of HPAI H5N1 in kept birds this season and follows recent detections of HPAI H5N1 in wild birds both in the South West of England and in continental Europe...

Avian flu confirmed at Norfolk premises

December 06, 2024

A fresh case of highly pathogenic avian influenza has been detected among commercial poultry in East Anglia – the third in England so far this season.
Restrictions have been put in place around the affected premises near Watton, Norfolk, after the H5N1 virus strain was confirmed there yesterday (5 December).
An update issued by Defra and the APHA said all birds on the site would be culled, with a 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone in place around it.

Cornish case
Similar restrictions remain in place around a site in Cornwall where H5N1 was also detected last month.
But limits have been eased in East Yorkshire, where the H5N5 strain was discovered at a site near Hornsea earlier in November.

Although a surveillance area remains in place, the protection zone was lifted earlier this week following what the agencies described as the “successful completion of disease control activities and surveillance”.

Further bird flu cases confirmed at farm

BBC News

An outbreak of bird flu has been confirmed at a commercial farm near Beverley in East Yorkshire.

The government's Animal and Plant Health Agency said on Tuesday that due to the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) strain H5N1, all poultry on the premises would now be humanely culled.

A 3km (nearly two miles) protection zone cordon and a 10km (about six miles) surveillance zone cordon have been put in place around the premises.

A spokesperson for the agency said: "All bird keepers should remain vigilant and follow stringent biosecurity measures to prevent future outbreaks."

The news comes as a number of confirmed and suspected bird flu cases have also been reported in Norfolk.

Previous restrictions at a farm near Hornsea in East Yorkshire after an outbreak reported on 5 November had now been lifted "following successful completion of disease control activities", the agency added...

13 December 2024

Following a number of findings of highly pathogenic avian influenza in wild birds and detections in poultry in the East Riding of Yorkshire and Norfolk, a regional avian influenza prevention zone (AIPZ) has been declared in the East Riding of Yorkshire, City of Kingston upon Hull, Norfolk and Suffolk to mitigate the risk of further outbreaks of disease occurring.

This means that it is a legal requirement for all bird keepers within the zone to follow strict biosecurity measures to help protect their flocks, of whatever type or size. This does not include a requirement to house birds, unless you are also in a 3km protection zone. However, this is being kept under constant review.

See the interactive map for details and check the declarations for details of the restrictions.

It is the fourth case to have been found in this area of mid Norfolk in the last week.

To combat the spread, the East Riding of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Suffolk was declared an avian influenza prevention zone on Friday.

This means all poultry and captive bird owners in the area must follow strict instructions.

Concern is especially growing for East Anglian poultry farmers, who were at the centre of the nation's worst-ever avian flu outbreak during the autumn and winter of 2022.

Two monitoring control zones of 3km (1.8-mile) and 10 km (6.2-mile) radius have been put in place around the premises and all birds on the sites would be humanely culled.

On Monday, the virus was confirmed in captive birds at a premises near Cranworth, close to Watton, while earlier in the month three other cases were confirmed in mid Norfolk - two in Watton, and another 16km (10 miles) away in Dereham.

On Friday, Defra announced Norfolk, Suffolk, Lincolnshire and parts of Yorkshire had been made subject to an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ), to mitigate the risk of further outbreaks...

  • the unitary authorities of the East Riding of Yorkshire
  • the City of Kingston upon Hull
  • all districts in Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Suffolk
From noon on Monday 23 December 2024 all bird keepers in the AIPZ must keep their birds housed to protect them from bird flu. This applies to pet birds, commercial flocks and just a few birds in a backyard flock.

These housing and biosecurity measures are to mitigate the risk of further outbreaks of disease occurring.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 was confirmed in captive birds at a second premises near Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, Yorkshire (AIV 2024/13). A 3km captive bird (monitoring) controlled zone has been declared surrounding the premises. The affected birds on the premises will be humanely culled.

19 December 2024
