Britain is in the grips of a scarlet fever outbreak as hundreds of cases of the disease have been recorded across England and Wales in recent weeks.

The infectious disease, which was most prominent in the Victorian era, is largely a childhood affliction seen in those aged between two and eight.

The historically dangerous fever is far less serious in the modern day as the disease, characterised by a bright red rash and a sore throat, can be treated with antibiotics.

Despite this, hundreds of cases of the infectious disease have been reported across England and Wales in recent weeks, the Mirror reported. ...

Concern as scarlet fever cases continue to rise across the South West

A further outbreak of scarlet fever has hit the South West with 36 new cases reported across the region in the past seven days.

It comes after Public Health England issued a health warning as a number of cases of the bacterial infection were confirmed across Bath and Somerset earlier this month.

The number of cases diagnosed across Somerset alone in the past three weeks stands at 20.

Seven people have suffered with the illness in Bristol in the past fortnight and nine cases have been confirmed in Wiltshire in the same time period.

Public Health England has released the figures online and is urging people to be aware of the symptoms so they can receive prompt treatment if they fall ill...

People across Somerset and Bath have been urged to be aware of the symptoms of scarlet fever after a huge outbreak of the illness across the county over the Christmas period.

A total of 25 cases were confirmed across the county in the final two weeks of December, according to figures released by Public Health England .

It represents a huge rise in the number of cases seen across Somerset - which had seen 14 people diagnosed with the bacterial infection in the previous two weeks ...

The number of cases of scarlet fever in Lincolnshire has doubled since 2018 following a fresh outbreak of the illness over the holidays.

A total of 30 cases have been confirmed across the county in December 2019, according to figures released by Public Health England.

This figure is over double the number of recorded cases in 2018, with 13 recorded cases.

A total of 11 cases were recorded over the Christmas period, with four reported in Lincoln, three in South Holland and two in South Kesteven and North Kesteven...
