Hundreds of students have been struck down by a severe outbreak of mumps that is spreading across British universities.

Public Health England figures show that more than 7,200 suspected mumps cases have been reported in the UK since July, almost triple the same period last year.

Health officials said students were driving the surge and urged any who missed out on the MMR jab to get vaccinated...

Fresh mumps outbreak hits Bath and Somerset as multiple new cases confirmed
Warnings about the illness have been issued by Public Health England

A fresh outbreak of mumps has hit Somerset over the past fortnight with multiple new cases of the illness confirmed across the county.

Twenty fresh cases of the disease were confirmed across the county during the final two weeks of December, according to figures released by Public Health England .

A total of 14 cases have been reported in North Somerset, while three people have been diagnosed with the illness across Bath and North East Somerset.

Two people have suffered with mumps in South Somerset while there was an isolated case in Mendip.

Five cases were reported in Dorset, with a further four coming from Wiltshire. There were also 12 confirmed cases in the Bristol area.

It comes just weeks after another outbreak of the illness which saw 19 confirmed cases across the region in the space of a fortnight..

Avon Rugby Club was forced to cancel its first team game against Nailsea and Backwell Seniors on Saturday after an outbreak of the disease amongst players.

The game was due to be held at the club’s base at West End in Nailsea.

Swansea RFC have explained the extent of the mumps outbreak within the club which has forced them to call off a Welsh Premiership game for the second successive weekend.

The Welsh Rugby Union have agreed to a request for Saturday’s scheduled game with Cardiff at St Helen's to be postponed because of the problem.

Eight players and a coach have been affected.

The issue caused the cancellation of the date with Aberavon last weekend, when the Wizards reported that they had received a call from Swansea saying two of their players had been hit by the condition.

But that number has since escalated, forcing the Whites to seek another postponement.

Club chairman Stephen Hughes said: “We’ve had eight players and a coach affected by the condition.

“Aberavon were understanding of the position last week when we had two cases...

There have been multiple new cases of scarlet fever and mumps confirmed across Bath and Somerset in the first week of 2020.

Figures from Public Health England show a number of new cases of both illnesses in a variety of places around the county.

The data shows the number of cases of infectious diseases reported for the week ending Sunday January 5.

Scarlet fever

In total there have been six cases of scarlet fever declared in Somerset.

Two of these cases were reported in South Somerset, with another two in the Sedgemoor area...

Cases of suspected mumps rocketed in Lancashire last year.

In 2019, 314 suspected cases were reported in the area to Public Health England (PHE).

That’s almost triple the 120 suspected cases in 2018.

It is also the highest number since comparable records began in 2011. The figures include 64 suspected cases in West Lancashire, 32 in Lancaster, 31 in Preston, and 30 in Blackpool.

The area also saw 30 suspected cases of measles last year, the same number as in 2018...

Cases of suspected mumps rocketed in Wales last year, new figures have revealed.

In 2019, 2,608 suspected cases were reported across the country to Public Health England (PHE), which gathers data for England and Wales.

That's five times the 495 suspected cases reported in Wales in 2018. It is also the highest number since comparable records began in 2011.

The figures include 752 suspected cases in Cardiff, 378 in Swansea and 141 in Carmarthenshire in 2019...

A fresh outbreak of mumps has hit the North East with 169 reported cases in the last two weeks.

Figures from Public Health England (PHE) show there were 95 reports of the infectious disease in the week ending January 12, and 74 in the week ending January 5.

These were by far the highest numbers in England and a sharp rise from 30 reported cases in the last week of 2019. A PHE report showed there were 29 cases in the North East between July and September last year.

The area with the highest number of suspected sufferers was Newcastle, and recent increases have largely been driven by outbreaks in university students.

The breakdown of new cases for last week is Gateshead , 9; Newcastle , 28; North Tyneside , 7; South Tyneside , 14; Sunderland , 7; County Durham , 9; Northumberland , 18; Middlesbrough, 1 and Stockton on Tees, 2.

At the end of November last year, Newcastle University issued a warning that mumps "is circulating in students in parts of England including Newcastle, particularly among 15-25 year olds"....

Newport v Swansea and all of Abercynon RFC's senior and youth fixtures have been called off due to illness, following on from the past two weekends that saw Swansea call off successive fixtures against Aberavon and Cardiff.

However, on this occasion, it is Newport, not Swansea, who have been hit by the illness...

The number of people confirmed to have been diagnosed with the illness in the past seven days stands at 83, with 17 of those cases being in Somerset.

It brings the number of people to have suffered with mumps in the South West in the first three weeks of the year to 216.

Two dozen fresh cases of mumps have been recorded in Derbyshire since the beginning of the year...

...Overall, figures in the report show that North East Derbyshire is the area where the most cases of mumps have been diagnosed so far this month.

In the first week of the new year, from December 30 to January 5, seven cases of mumps were reported to PHE.

Five were in Derbyshire with one in the areas of Amber Valley, Derbyshire Dales, Erewash and two cases in North East Derbyshire.

The other two cases were in Derby city.

During the following week, the number of recorded cases of mumps in the county increased to eight.

There was one case in Chesterfield, one in Derbyshire Dales, two in Erewash and one in North East Derbyshire.

In Derby city, three cases of mumps were recorded which was the lowest number in the East Midlands that week...

Cases of mumps in England have reached a decade high, data shows.

The viral infection is defined by painful swelling in the side of the face under the ears, leading to a “hamster” appearance.

Most cases pass in a week or two with rest, fluids and painkillers.

Around one in seven sufferers, however, develop viral meningitis. Other complications include inflammation of the pancreas, testicles and ovaries.

Outbreaks in universities and colleges led to 5,042 mumps cases in 2019, four times as many as 2008.

One Leeds University student reportedly needed morphine to cope with the pain, while another told the BBC her jaw “pretty much locked”...
