Parents have been warned to check their children for symptoms of scarlet fever following a growing number of cases in recent weeks.

Official figures for 2017 have revealed that there has been a recent increase in reports of the illness, including 21 cases in South Yorkshire.

There have been 2,106 cases of scarlet fever across the country with a total of 239 reports coming from Yorkshire and the Humber.

While these figures are slightly below last year's, 2143 and 254 respectively, Public Health England (PHE) warned cases usually increase at this time of the year...

Scarlet fever is spreading across the UK at a faster rate than any time in the last 100 years with experts baffled as to the reason why, according to a new study.

England, Wales and Northern Ireland experienced an unprecedented rise in scarlet fever in 2014, after decades of declining incidence. England alone has experienced a seven-fold increase in new cases notified in the last 5 years, research published in The Lancet Infectious Disease Journal reveals. Public health experts in the UK joined forces to investigate the rise. Using data from 1911 onwards in England and Wales, they found that incidence of scarlet fever tripled between 2013 and 2014, rising from 8.2 per 100,000 (4,700 cases) to 27.2 per 100,000 (15,637).

The resurgence of the infectious disease continued in 2015 and reached a 50-year high last year with 620 outbreaks involving 19,206 cases, mostly in schools and nurseries. The population rate in 2016 was 33.2 cases per 100,000. Following the sharp rise in the absolute number of cases, hospitalisations almost doubled between 2013, when there 703, and last year (1,300). The highest infection rates in 2015 and 2016 were recorded in the East Midlands, Yorkshire and Humber, and North East.
