Whooping cough outbreak warning


Scotland is experiencing the worst outbreak of whooping cough since the 1980s, according to health chiefs.

GPs have reported 873 cases so far this year, compared with only 36 for the same period last year.

Five babies have died elsewhere in the UK from the disease since the current outbreak which began at the end of last year...

'Concerning' jump in whooping cough cases

There has been a large rise in the number of cases of whooping cough, as the outbreak in England and Wales continues.

By the end of June there had been 2,466 cases in 2012. There were an additional 1,047 cases in July alone.

The total number of cases for 2012 is now three time higher than for the whole of 2011.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said it was "very concerned" by the number of cases...

Huge increase in whooping cough cases

MORE than 1000 people have fallen ill with whooping cough in Scotland and the outbreak is expected to get worse.

Figures just released show GPs have reported 1020 cases since the start of the year, compared to 43 for the same period in 2011.

Although the speed with which the infection is spreading appeared to reduce during the last month, experts at surveillance agency Health Protection Scotland (HPS) said this may be linked to school and university holidays. As young people return to classrooms and lecture halls more people may contract it...

Staff whooping cough cases at Forth Valley Royal Hospital
Parents of 25 babies who attended Forth Valley Royal Hospital have been contacted


Two members of staff at a hospital in Scotland have confirmed cases of whooping cough.

It comes as the country is experiencing the worst outbreak of the disease since the 1980s.

The staff work in the emergency department at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert. Two others have suspected cases...

A whooping cough outbreak across Sussex is showing no signs of slowing.

There have been 254 reported cases so far this year, eight times the number recorded for all of 2011. Adults and children are the most prone but some very young babies have also been affected...

..There have been 46 cases in Brighton and Hove compared to three last year while East Sussex has risen from seven to 101 and West Sussex from 21 to 107...

HEALTH officials have raised concerns following an "unprecedented" rise in cases of a highly infectious bacterial disease.

Whooping cough spreads when a person with the infection coughs and sheds the bacteria, which is then inhaled by another person.

So far this year, 52 cases have been confirmed in the East Riding, with a further three in Hull.

By contrast, there was just one case in the East Riding in 2008 and no cases in Hull...

The number of cases of whooping cough continues to rise, with almost 1100 reported to GPs since the start of 2012.

The condition causes intense bouts of coughing which can last for three months. It is a cyclical disease with the number of cases peaking every three to four years.

Scotland is experiencing the worst outbreak of whooping cough since the 1980s. Case numbers have now reached 1,084 for this year compared with 46 over the same period in 2011, according to Health Protection Scotland...

Tayside sees dramatic rise in whooping cough cases

Cases of potentially deadly whooping cough in Tayside have increased by 2000% in the first six months of this year compared to the same period in 2011.

NHS Tayside have confirmed that more than 110 laboratory-confirmed cases were reported to GPs, plus a further 130 suspected cases, between January and July.

Last year there were fewer than five confirmed or suspected cases of the illness which can affect people of any age but is usually seen in infants less than a year old...

The number of babies who have died in the biggest outbreak of whooping cough for 20 years has increased to 10, health officials said.

Ten infants under the age of three months have died in England so far this year as a result of the infectious disease.

There were 1,322 confirmed cases in England and Wales in September alone, 300 more than the total figure for 2011 when there were 1,118 cases, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) said.

There were 6,121 confirmed cases between January and September this year, the HPA said...

Whooping cough: Five-fold jump in Wales cases up to 185

Parents are being warned to vaccinate their children against whooping cough as figures show cases in Wales have increased five-fold so far this year.

Some 185 cases have been reported by the end of September compared to 37 in 2011 and eight in 2010...

Ten-fold increase in whooping cough in Somerset

GPs and Public Health Advisors in Somerset are urging all pregnant women to have the whooping cough vaccination and parents ensure their children are vaccinated against the disease on time.

The call comes as figures published by the Health Protection Agency show that in the first ten months of this year there were 53 infant cases of whooping cough in Somerset compared with just six cases during the last "peak" year of 2008...

...The number of cases of whooping cough cases has jumped from 944 last year to 8,819 so far in 2012, according to the latest figures from the Health Protection Agency, with 1,080 coming in November alone.

At the end of September, the Department of Health announced a vaccination programme for pregnant women, but the HPA has said it is still too early for this to have had an impact on the number of cases.

The Department of Health has however recently reported an uptake of around 40 per cent in pregnant women.

The total of 1,080 cases in November was in fact a decrease from October when 1,631 cases were reported for England and Wales, the first decrease in monthly numbers since the current outbreak started in the middle of last year...

Ten week old baby from Carlton dies of whooping cough - as cases across Notts soar

PARENTS are being warned about a surge in the number of whooping cough cases after the death of a baby in Notts.

Over the past 12 months, there have been five times as many cases of whooping cough in Notts as there were in 2011...

... Children are particularly vulnerable to the condition and, nationally, 13 babies and toddlers were killed by it last year.

Cameron Davis, 54, of Carlton, lost his ten-week old grandson Camron to the disease on December 12 and attended his funeral on Friday. He said: "It's a horrible condition and I'm living with the tragedies of it. I've had it myself, I caught it in October and I'm still not over it.

"My advice to any parent or pregnant woman is to take the vaccination..."

A DRAMATIC rise in the number of people with whooping cough has been revealed.

In the first 48 weeks of 2012, laboratory testing confirmed 1,704 cases.

This is 17 times the total for the same period of 2011, when 99 cases were recorded.

Young children are the most likely to develop complications from the disease, which can require hospital treatment and prove fatal in the most severe cases.

The Health Protection Scotland figures reveal that 130 of the confirmed cases were babies under the age of one, of which 69 per cent were younger than three months...
