Health chiefs have said they are concerned about an outbreak of measles in Leeds, the first confirmed cases in the city since 2009.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said 14 confirmed cases and five suspected cases had been reported since February.

The agency said the majority of cases were students, indicating the disease was circulating within the city's student community.

Doctors are urging those not vaccinated to contact their GP...

Since the beginning of February, 14 cases of the disease have been confirmed and there have been another five possible cases, most among students.

Measles alert as Sussex and Surrey schools report cases

A number of confirmed cases of measles across Sussex and Surrey has led to the Health Protection Agency (HPA) issuing an alert to families travelling abroad.

It said a small number of schools in the counties had reported cases in the past few weeks.

The HPA urged families going abroad for the Easter holidays to ensure they were up to date with their MMR vaccines.

It said the advice followed a large outbreak of measles in France and cases in Italy, Germany and Bulgaria...

An outbreak of measles in Brighton and Hove has sparked fears another epidemic will hit the city.

There have been four confirmed cases of the virus in the last month and doctors are waiting for the results of lab tests on six more suspected victims.

Children across the city from Portslade to Woodingdean have been infected so far and the number is expected to rise when schools return after the Easter break.

Health bosses believe the virus may be starting to circulate within the community rather than just affecting individual families...

Island Families Urged to Protect Against Measles Outbreak

Too few children on the Isle of Wight have had the MMR vaccine, leading to fears that the disease could spread here from current outbreaks in Europe.

The illness is affecting countries including France, Germany, Italy and Bulgaria.

It has led health professionals on the Island to urge parents to check whether their children have had two doses of the MMR jabs before they go on holiday. It is particularly concerning as there is a low take-up of the vaccine on the Island.

Parents have been urged to immunise their children against measles as cases of the potentially killer disease are on the increase, public health experts have warned.

The rise has been put down to outbreaks in Europe as well as a significant number of youngsters only being partially immunised against measles, which can lead to pneumonia and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain).

Across Kent and Medway last year there were just seven cases of measles, including five in west Kent. However, this year there have already been 19 infections county-wide with 13 of those in the west, from January to April 6...

Wirral measles outbreak sparks vaccine pleas

A woman in her 20s is seriously ill in hospital after an outbreak of measles in Wirral.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said two children had been confirmed as having the disease and there were seven other probable cases, including adults.

None of those affected had been fully immunized with the MMR vaccine.

The agency has advised parents to ensure their children have had two doses of the vaccine and urged adults to check with their GPs.

The measles patient admitted to hospital last week is now recovering after treatment.

Measles outbreak warning as cases rise in Europe and UK

In the 1990s, experts thought they were close to eliminating measles for good.

But now the World Health Organization (WHO) has put back its target date for getting rid of the disease to 2015. But even that seems unlikely.

The reason? A measles outbreak which is spreading across Europe, affecting France, Belgium, Germany and Romania - and now the UK.

Other significant outbreaks are taking place in Serbia, Spain, Macedonia and Turkey, the WHO says.

Over the last few months, the Health Protection Agency has seen an increase in measles cases in children and young adults in England and Wales.

Their figures show that between January and April, 275 laboratory-confirmed cases of measles were reported, compared to 33 cases for the same period the previous year.

The HPA says these cases are, "associated with either recent travel abroad or small clusters in mainly unvaccinated children and young adults between the ages of 10-24..."

The number of measles cases across Sussex more than doubled in a month.

Health bosses are now urging people to make sure their children are vaccinated amid fears of an epidemic sweeping the county...

...There were 15 confirmed cases of measles in Sussex in mid April but this has now risen to 40, almost four times as many as the number reported for the whole of 2010.

Brighton and Hove has had 11 cases, East Sussex 18 and West Sussex 11.

ADVICE letters have been sent out to parents of pupils at an Old Town primary school after two youngsters contracted measles.

The Health Protection Agency, NHS Swindon and Swindon Council are working closely with Lethbridge Primary School, following two confirmed cases and one suspected case.

The two cases are believed to have been over a six week period and information letters have been sent by the school informing parents of the symptoms of measles and advising that any children who have not had two MMR jabs should be immunised as soon as possible...

An independent school has been struck by an outbreak of measles which is believed to have affected up to 20 children.

The Health Protection Agency has confirmed it is investigating the outbreak at the Sands School, a ?8,310 per year private school near Ashburton in Devon. It has around 70 students aged between 11 and 16....

There have been more cases of measles in the first five months of this year than in the whole of 2010, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA). It says 496 cases of measles were reported in England and Wales up to the end of May, compared with 374 for the whole of 2010. Most cases were in London and the south-east, with children and teenagers most commonly affected. HPA data also shows a rise in children having the combined measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Among two-year-olds quarterly figures show 90% were vaccinated ? the highest level for 13 years. PA

CASES of measles have increased in Scotland in the past year, figures show.
Health Protection Scotland (HPS) said that in the first 24 weeks of 2011, they had received 54 reports of suspected measles and 22 laboratory-confirmed cases. In the same period in 2010 there were 38 reports of suspected measles and no confirmed case

And for the whole of last year, Scotland saw only 11 confirmed cases of the illness, the HPS report found...

Parents are being urged to get their children vaccinated as the number of people infected by measles in Sussex continues to rise.

There have been 73 confirmed cases of the virus so far this year, more than ten times the number for the whole of 2010.

Health bosses believe many people have caught the virus while visiting countries which are experiencing a mass outbreak of the disease.

The Health Protection Agency is warning families planning to visit France, Bulgaria and Italy during the summer holidays to make sure everyone is protected.

It says there have been 16 cases of measles in Brighton and Hove, 40 in East Sussex and 17 in West Sussex.

However it is believed the actual number could be even higher because not every case is sent for testing.

The people affected are scattered around the county, instead of in clusters, which suggests the disease is becoming more widespread...

Measles is on the rise in the UK, with more than twice as many cases so far this year as there were in the whole of 2010, according to new figures.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said there have been 777 cases across England and Wales in the first seven months of 2011, compared to 374 for all of last year.

Most of those affected have been children and young adults, and it's thought the disease is being spread by families returning from holidays in European countries including France, Spain, Switzerland and Germany.

The HPA also reported 896 cases of meningococcal infection in 2010, one of the most common causes of meningitis...

Students are being urged to make sure they have been vaccinated against measles, as health experts fear an outbreak of the disease.

Data from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) shows the number of confirmed cases so far this year is already more than double the total number for 2010.

By the end of July this year, there were 777 confirmed cases, compared with 374 cases for the whole of last year.

GP practices in university towns and cities have been alerted.

The HPA fears outbreaks are likely as students return to university campuses at the start of the new term, with the majority of cases so far being among children or young adults under the age of 25...

Cases of measles in Kent so far this year are more than 10 times the number of diagnoses made in 2010, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

The HPA said there had been 62 cases up to July, mainly in children and young adults, compared with six in 2010.

It said many cases had been in clusters in universities and schools, with many patients unvaccinated.

Students starting or returning to university are being urged to make sure they have had the MMR vaccine.

There were also 29 cases meningococcal meningitis last year, and the HPA is also advising students to have the meningitis C vaccination before they start term...
