Hertfordshire nature reserve closes due to bird flu

A nature reserve has been shut until further notice after wildfowl were found to have bird flu.

Amwell Nature Reserve near Ware, Hertfordshire, closed after advice from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

The Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust said four or five dead birds tested by Defra were confirmed to have avian flu.

A spokesman said: "Following advice [from Defra], the safest thing to do at present is to keep the reserve closed."

Amwell Nature Reserve re-opens following discovery of bird flu

Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust has taken the decision to re-open Amwell nature reserve following the discovery of bird flu last week. After taking advice from Defra and Public Health England, the Trust believes that the risk to visitors is extremely low.

Last week the Trust recovered 19 dead birds from the site which were subsequently tested positive for bird flu. On Saturday 20th January the Trust took the decision to close the reserve as a precautionary measure until further information was available from Defra. Following advice from Defra and Public Health England on Monday 22nd January and a site visit from our Reserve Manager and Health and Safety Officer, the Trust has decided to re-open the reserve.
Trust staff will continue to closely monitor the site and new signs will be put up at the reserve to warn visitors not to touch any dead birds or any bird poo. If visitors do see dead birds on site in a publicly accessible area, they should call Defra on 03459 335577.
