Uganda: Rare Eye Disease Attacks West

Mbarara ? At least 15 of every 100 people screened daily for eye-related infections at Ruharo Eye Clinic in Mbarara District have glaucoma, an eye disease now reported to be prevalent in western Uganda, a senior doctor has said.
Dr Michael Turyakira, a specialist in eye diseases at the clinic in Ruharo Missionary Hospital, in an interview last week, described the disease as 'dangerous', warning that hundreds risk waking up blind.

The clinic is the only well established eye service centre in the region serving at least 20 districts, including some in the central region. There are also patients from Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania.

"This is the most productive group which means if no urgent measures are taken, the consequences are dire," he said. He said the only prevention is for people to get regular medical checkup at least twice a year, adding that there is need to increase and make affordable eye treatment services.
