Police hold Red Cross workers for violating lockdown rules

Police has released thirteen health workers attached to the Uganda Red Cross Society on bond, a day after they were arrested for reportedly flouting lockdown restrictions in Mubende. Police earlier reported that the health workers were found in a bar in the Ebola hit district, but the Uganda Red Cross society denied any such claim. According to Red Cross, the volunteers are part of the safe and dignified burial team handling Ebola cases in the central district of Mubende.

Tanzania: Ebola Scare - State Strengthens Public Health Surveillance At Entry Points

THE government has strengthened public health surveillance across the country's entry points and port services as Uganda's capital Kampala records five new cases of the Sudan strain of Ebola Virus Disease, making up a total of 126 registered, said the Minister of Health Ms Ummy Mwalimu.

Ms Mwalimu revealed that previously the focus was to contain the disease in Kagera Region, but after the new development the direction has shifted to other high risk areas including Dar es Salaam.

Ebola: Report yourselves now, FG tells Ugandan returnees

​​​​​​The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has advised Nigerians to avoid all but essential travel to Uganda until public health authorities have determined the Ebola outbreak to be contained.

The NCDC made the announcement in a public health advisory signed by its Director General, Dr Ifedayo Adetifa, and obtained from its website on Monday.

​​​​​​Refugees castigate the behavior of some local officials and religious leaders who seem to neglect calls for vigilance, contenting themselves only with prayers.

For them, even the camp needed to be locked down, as irresponsible behavior is becoming more noticeable as the virus continues to kill people.

The Nakivale camp, located in the district of Isingiro, has more than 140,000 refugees of several nationalities, including more than 33,000 Burundians.

Concern as Kassanda registers more Ebola cases

​​​​​​The Ministry of Health has said it plans to set up an Ebola treatment centre in Kassanda District after recording a rise in cases of Ebola Virus Disease in the area...According to Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, between Thursday and Friday last week, they recorded 12 confirmed cases of Ebola“We are beginning to have an Ebola explosion from Kassanda District.
We have now decided to plan for an Ebola treatment unit in Kassanda because of the surge in the cases registered there,” she said...

..But the Mubende Regional Hospital Ebola treatment unit is now overwhelmed by both suspected and confirmed cases coming from Kassanda.

31 Ebola burial officials arrested
KASSANDA - At a time when more cases of Ebola are being registered in Kassanda and Mubende districts, over 31 officials involved in the fight against Ebola have been arrested by Police over accusations of engaging in acts likely to spread the disease.

Among them are 13 volunteers from the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) and the rest from different Government and non-governmental institutions.

In bar at 11:00pm

Wamala Region Police Spokesperson Racheal Kawala said the suspects were found in a bar at night over the weekend.

“Police arrested them for flouting guidelines against the spread of Ebola,” Kawala said Monday, October 31, 2022.

It, however, remained unclear how this bar, which is in the middle of the town was open, serving over 30 people at 11:00 pm as Kawala referred New Vision to Police spokesperson Fred Enanga.

....In Several meetings, these officials have always noted that medics are shying away from being trained to handle Ebola.

Likewise, the two districts have always asked for more burial teams, yet few people were willing to be trained.

Ebola: Schools, parents defy govt on visitation days

​​​​​​Several schools in and around Kampala defied the government and held visitation days over the weekend despite an order suspending related events over the ongoing Ebola outbreak.

The ministry of Education sent out a circular on Friday afternoon instructing all heads of schools and institutions to cancel leavers' parties for primary seven and senior candidates as well as academic and visitation days.

The circular signed by Ismael Mulindwa, the acting permanent secretary, also noted that learners in boarding institutions should be discouraged from making non-essential trips out of the school. The circular came days after six school children from three different schools tested positive for the deadly Ebola virus.

Numerous schools in Kampala, Wakiso, and other regions of the country continued with their scheduled activities on Saturday. For instance, Light Islamic School in Nabweru, Nansana Municipality, invited parents and well-wishers to attend their academic day with a band march that went around the neighbouring villages early morning.....
A parent in Lwengo district also confirmed that she was attending a visitation at Apex primary school in Kinoni town council...


This is not the first time that schools are defying the ministry of Education regarding school visitations and standard operating procedures during an outbreak of a disease. When COVID-19 broke out, many schools exhibited a similar defiant spirit and in the end, hundreds of students caught the virus. Health Workers Wrongly Arrested in Mubende - Health Ministry

Dr. Henry Mwebesa, the Director General of Health Services told URN that the team had held a small party at their residence and played loud music which attracted police attention. While he says they shouldn’t have done that, he adds that they didn’t flout any health guidelines as they didn’t invite in other people from outside.;)

MPs call on Govt to change its approach to fighting Ebola

The opposition in parliament has called on the government to shift its approach to fighting the spread of Ebola from focusing on individual patients to looking at the fluids from these patients, through coughing, running, sweating and others that can infect others.

Speaking to reporters in parliament, shadow health minister Dr Timothy Batuwa said there were people at high risk of contracting Ebola such as boda boda drivers and domestic workers whom the government had not considered in the fight against the disease.

And the shadow minister in charge of information and MP for Mityana district, Joyce Bagala is concerned about families digging up the bodies of their relatives who have died of Ebola for religious ceremonies.

Health ministry calls for early closure of schools over Ebola

​​​​​​The Minister of Health, Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, has asked the Ministry of Education and Sports to consider early examinations for non-candidate classes so that schools can close early for the third term holidays.

Dr Aceng said the move is aimed to decongest schools and minimise the risk of spreading Ebola.

“The Permanent Secretary recently, in one of her addresses, [urged] schools to ensure that they follow the standard operating procedures (SOP) during this time until the children do exams and go home. However, it would be extremely nice if the Ministry of Education considered early exams so that we are only left with the candidates,” Dr Aceng said while giving Ebola updates on national television on Sunday.

“We know that the timeframe for candidates to do their exams has already been fixed. The fewer the learners at school, the easier for us to carry out surveillance and ensure that learners are safe,” she added....

Last week, the Ministry of Health announced that at least six pupils from three schools in Rubaga Division in Kampala were among the 47 Ebola patients fighting for their lives at various treatment centres in the country.

In an interview with this publication yesterday, the director general for Health Services, Dr Henry Mwebesa, said one of the children passed away last Friday but the rest were improving....

Exhumation of bodies by locals in Kassanda is the main cause of the escalating Ebola cases in the district, a top health official has said.
Dr Geofrey Bwire, the assistant commissioner in the Ministry of Health, said when specialised district burial teams bury those who have died of Ebola, residents exhume the bodies at night to perform rituals on them.
“About two weeks ago, our teams buried someone in Kalwana Village, Kikandwa Sub-county, who had succumbed to Ebola but the locals waited for them to leave and at night, they exhumed the body and performed burial rituals on it. Since bodies of those who have died from Ebola are highly infectious, many people were infected,” Dr Bwire told a meeting on Ebola response in the district yesterday....

He said following the exhumation, 23 confirmed cases were registered out of the total 42 in the district, adding that 546 contacts were traced out of that burial.....
