  • ,,,,Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng says she is increasingly concerned about transmission of the virus in urban areas, where the population is highly mobile.

    The six siblings who tested positive for Ebola in the capital have not been named or had their ages revealed, to protect their identities. But we do know that the schools these children attend have not been closed....
  • Dr Aceng says six health workers who became infected after treating patients are also among those who recently died.

    Kampala is the country's economic hub and if Ebola spreads fast there, there is a greater risk of the virus spreading to other countries.

Authorities in Kabale district have intensified security at Katuna border by establishing an Ebola screening point at the border as a way of curbing down the spread of the disease.

1. The #Ebola Sudan outbreak in Uganda is now the 9th largest Ebola outbreak on record, with 135 confirmed and probable cases, and 52 confirmed and probable deaths. These data are current to Oct. 26, which was the 37th day (ie just over 5 weeks) since the outbreak was declared.

2. As I've said a number of times, the #Ebola outbreak in Uganda got quite big, quite fast. There were 2 dozen previous outbreaks that didn't get to 100 cases. The Ugandan Ministry of Health continues to only report confirmed cases. Add 20 probables to their cases & deaths.

1. #Ebola thread. The numbers in the Ugandan outbreak are rising pretty rapidly. Last week this outbreak was the 11th largest on record. It's now the 8th. There's a fairly big gap between 8th and 7th, but I would not bet against this outbreak moving further up the top 10 list.

2. One of the reasons I think this #Ebola outbreak could get a lot larger is just the pace of the recent growth of cases & the presence of cases in Kampala. But also, the followup rate of contacts listed in the latest SitRep from Uganda is not great.

3. Uganda has been boasting a contact follow up rate of in the mid-to-high 90% range. It's down to 88%. And that's of the contacts they know if. If they are missing cases, there are more contacts they don't know of. The bigger an outbreak gets, the harder this job becomes.

4. Last point: an explanation. The numbers of #Ebola cases & deaths I used in the chart in my first tweet here include the 128 confirmed cases & 34 confirmed deaths Uganda announces, + 21 probable cases
@WHO
