From Uganda Picks:Four Die of Cholera in Nebbi

"The Chief Administrative officer Nebbi, Seraphine Alia has announced plans to supervise sanitation and hygiene in Nebbi district following the outbreak of Cholera in the district.

...He also confirmed that already 4 people have died as a result of cholera outbreak in the district and added that so far 18 others are being admitted in a health facility in Panyamur Nebbi district."

On January 17th/2013, a business woman Akumu Consolate from Ongwedo Village, Bullisa District reported to Die health centre II in Nebbi district for treatment with signs of excessive watery diarrhea.

At the Health Centre she was given Oral Rehydration Salst while her condition was monitored by In-Charge Dei Health Centre II.

However her relatives moved Akumu to her home from where two children in the neighborhood developed similar symptoms and died from Dei village and Munduryema village .

Medical reports indicate it was cholera which has eventually spread throughout the 6 Villages of Dei parish living the other 6 villages vulnerable to the epidemic more. Dei parish is found in Panyimur sub county Nebbi district .Dei parish has six villages in the name of Dei, Dei A, Dei B, Dei C, Dei centre, and Namutangna village.

Actions taken:

? Uganda Red Cross Society through its Nebbi branch is working with the district authorities to combat the outbreak. The Ministry of Health is liaising with both the district and Red Cross to strengthen social mobilization.

? Already, Red Cross volunteers in Nebbi have embarked on social mobilization and hygiene promotion in the affected areas.

? The volunteers are sensitizing communities about symptoms and signs of cholera.

? URCS and Nebbi District reports indicate that 28 cases of cholera have been registered since January 17th.

? As of Jan 28 three people are still admitted at Dei HC II for surveillance. The rest of the patients have since been discharged."

Uganda: Cholera Strikes Ntoroko As Floods Displace Families

"At least 18 cholera cases have recently been confirmed in Ntoroko district following massive displacement of residents by floods.

According to Ntoroko MP Martin Mugara, the patients were admitted to Ntoroko health Center II. He said 10 of the patients were discharged on Monday...".

Uganda: Three Die of Suspected Cholera in Hoima

Three people have been confirmed dead while sixteen others are hospitalized following a suspected Cholera Outbreak in Kigorobya Sub-county, Hoima district.

The District Health Inspector, Fred Byenumi, told New Vision on Tuesday evening that the suspected outbreak has been reported in Kapaapi and Kibiro parishes along Lake Albert shores...

The minister of state for disaster preparedness Musa Ecweru has warned of a possible cholera outbreak in some parts of Kasese district which were affected by the floods.
