Three die in Uganda from Ebola-like fever - Health Ministry

A male farmer is still being treated for a confirmed case of Congo Crimean Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), and the three other deaths are being investigated, junior health minister Elioda Tumwesigye told a news conference.

Doctors at first suspected the farmer had Ebola, the highly contagious and lethal viral fever, after falling ill on August 8 with sudden headache, bleeding, high fever, joint muscle pain, vomiting, red eyes, back pain and stomach pain.

Subsequent tests showed it was CCHF. Caused by a tick-borne virus, it is highly infectious and is endemic in livestock in Africa. It kills 40 percent of all the people it infects, according to the Health Ministry.

Dr Elioda Tumwesigye, the Minister of state for Health in charge General Duties, today stated that after tests done by the Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe, the samples obtained from one person have tested positive for the Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever. The outbreak was first reported on Thursday afternoon with Agago district officials claiming that there was an outbreak of ebola in the district.

BREAKING: Blood samples taken from a male farmer in Agago district have tested positive for the Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF). This confirms earlier Ministry of Health (MoH) suspicions that the Ebola-like virus that has seen four people in Agago admitted at Kalongo Hospital was CCHF. The confirmed case is first one to be reported in Uganda according to MoH which is monitoring six cases and investigating three deaths. The Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever is a tick-borne viral disease that can affect humans when they come into contact with infected animals or people with a 30% mortality rate. The pathogenic virus is common in East and West Africa. In July this year, five deaths attributed to the fever were reported in Kosovo. The Ugandan Ministry of Health says they have the capacity to contain the disease.

The ministry of health has confirmed an outbreak of the Congo Crimean Haemorrhagic Fever in the northern district of Agago.

State minister for health in charge of general duties, Dr Elioda Tumwesigye Friday confirmed that one person had tested positive to the deadly haemorrhagic fever.

?The ministry of health informs the general public that a haemorrhagic fever outbreak has been confirmed in Amot sub-county, Agago district,? the minister said at a press briefing in Kampala.

The ministry, however, dismissed earlier reports that linked the haemorrhagic fever to Ebola.

"This disease is not Ebola, although it also causes bleeding. It is not Marburg either. People should remain calm because Uganda has the capacity to containable it," the minister stated.

Agago- One person has died of haemorrhagic fever and four others have been admitted to hospital in Agago District.
The ailment, according to th
e Uganda Media Centre?s tweet, is the Crimean-Congo fever.
However, Agago health officials, quoting the Ministry of Health said the disease is Ebola.

He identified the deceased as Moses Omolo, 32, a resident of Abarimaa village, Awonodwee parish in Omot Sub-county.

A nurse, who preferred anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said one patient escaped from the hospital after his blood sample had been taken.
?We have failed to trace him. There are fears that he will spread the virus in the community,? the nurse said.

She said three more cases had been reported in Omot. However, this could not be independently verified. or officially confirmed.

The ministry of health has issued a nationwide alert following the confirmed outbreak of the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever-CCHF in Agago district.

Dr. Issa Makumbi, the Head of Surveillance and Epidemiology at National Disease Control-NDC unit says in severe occurrences 40 in 100 people may die in an outbreak.

He says that investigations are ongoing to ascertain if four cases reported in Kalongo Hospital are linked to the CCHF virus. He explained that NDC has moved to strengthen surveillance in Agago and its neighboring districts saying the disease is highly infectious.

Uganda confirms outbreak of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever

The Ministry of Health of Uganda has today, Friday 16 August 2013, declared an outbreak of Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) in Omot sub-county of Agago district in northern Uganda.

The index case, confirmed by the Uganda Virus Research Institute, is a male farmer from Baroma village in Atece Parish in Omot sub-county. He fell ill on 8 August 2013, presenting with high fever, general body weakness, muscle pain and bleeding from some body parts. On 10 August, he was admitted to Kalongo Hospital in Agago district where he is currently receiving treatment. In addition, three people in the affected area have reportedly died with similar symptoms. These deaths are currently being investigated.

In response to the outbreak, the government has reactivated the multi-sectoral, national taskforce on disease outbreaks to ensure effective coordination of response efforts. A multidisciplinary team consisting of animal and human health experts has been deployed to the affected district to support investigation and response to the outbreak. WHO and CDC experts are among the deployed field team. In addition WHO country office has provided funds for the initial response.

CCHF is a viral haemorrhagic fever transmitted to humans through tick bites. It can also be transmitted through contact with the blood of infected animals especially during slaughter. Nosocomial transmission can occur through contaminated medical equipment or body fluid from infected persons.

A CCHF outbreak constitutes a threat to public health. It is associated with high case fatality ratio (10-40%). The disease has the potential for infecting people working in or visiting hospitals.

In relation of this event, WHO does not advise any travel or trade restrictions.

THE ministry of health has confirmed that the Congo Crimean haemorrhagic fever has claimed the life of one female aged 27. The deceased was admitted at Mulago Hospital. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, the director general of health services, said the patient was admitted on August 16 with severe anaemia, vomiting, headaches and inter-menstrual bleeding.

In an official statement, Aceng said the ministry would intensify its response to the disease. The statement said this is the first confirmed death since the outbreak of the disease was announced on August 16. After confirmation of the disease in Kampala, Mulago Hospital has reopened its isolation facility to admit suspected cases in and around Kampala.

Ugandan woman killed by deadly fever suspected to have been infected by husband

August 23, 2013 (KAMPALA) - Uganda?s ministry of health said on Wednesday that a 27-year-old woman in Kampala had died after contracting the deadly Congo Crimean Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF).

The woman was married to a South Sudan-based Ugandan trader who had suffered from the disease while in South Sudan and had recently returned to Uganda where he is receiving additional treatment.

No Money to fight CCHF outbreak

Government continues to grapple with lack of funds to cater for the Congo Crimean Hemorrhagic Fever outbreak.
State health minister, Ellioda Tumwesigye says they have forwarded their request for money but no allocations have been made so far.
