Govt Raises Alarm Over Measles Surge, Announces Nationwide Vaccination Drive
By Muhamadi Matovu | Thursday, April 30, 2026

The Ministry of Health has raised concern over a rising number of measles cases across Uganda, warning that low vaccination coverage particularly for the second dose is driving new outbreaks among children under five.

The Director General of Health Services, Charles Olaro, said the country remains below the 95 percent immunisation threshold required to stop transmission, despite improvements in recent years.

National measles vaccination coverage rose to 90 percent in 2024, up from 79 percent in 2016.

According to the ministry, 66 districts reported outbreaks in 2025, with over 10,163 cases and 60 deaths recorded. The Karamoja sub-region accounted for 31 percent of the fatalities.

Between January and April 2026, 20 districts including Mubende, Gulu, and Adjumani have confirmed outbreaks, with 12 deaths reported...

Uganda begins five-day nationwide free measles vaccination drive
Measles outbreaks have been confirmed in 20 districts, with 12 deaths recorded.
News Agency of Nigeria • October 1, 2026

Uganda on Thursday began a five-day nationwide free measles vaccination campaign targeting children aged nine months to five years.

In a statement released ahead of the campaign, Minister of Health, Chris Baryomunsi, said the exercise was designed to reach eligible children, irrespective of whether they had previously received a measles vaccination.

“The objective of this campaign is to close the existing immunity gaps. Our longer term priority is to strengthen routine immunisation so that children receive their vaccines at the right time and sustain the level of population immunity required to prevent future outbreaks,” Mr Baryomunsi said.

Since January, measles outbreaks have been confirmed in 20 districts, with 12 deaths recorded...
