More than 700 pigs have died following an outbreak of African swine fever in Otuke District.

The affected areas include Barocok Parish in Barjobi Sub-county and several villages in Olilim and Ogwete sub-counties.

The chairperson of Okwang Sub-county, Mr Daniel Ojok Aruca, said the first case of swine fever was reported in the neigbouring Puranga Sub-county, Pader District, at the beginning of the year. The disease then spread to the neighbouring communities...

Suspected African swine fever kills 600 pigs in Kitgum, all eaten

Kitgum, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Kitgum’s chief veterinary officer Alfred Kinyera has linked the recent deaths of hundreds of pigs in the district to a possible outbreak of the deadly African Swine fever, but said investigations ongoing to confirm it.

More than 600 pigs have reportedly died in the villages of Bajere, Bajere East, Bajere South, Okwici East and Oget in Labongo Akwang sub-county since October when the strange disease was first reported according to local leaders.

The incident has created panic and left many pig farmers in the affected areas counting heavy losses.

This also prompted the district veterinary department to send out its extension workers to investigate the death of the pigs, and also educate farmers about the dangers and possible counter measures to control the disease.

Swine Fever Outbreak Confirmed in Eastern Uganda

The outbreak of African swine fever has been confirmed in the Eastern Uganda District of Soroti.

Dr Patrick Eyudu, the Soroti District Production Officer says that more than 50 pigs have died with the latest outbreak being reported in Tubur sub-county. The other affected sub-counties are Soroti and Kamuda.

Dr Eyudu says that they are worried that the disease might spread because some farmers don’t abide by the veterinary guidelines.

James Alanyu, the vice LC III chairperson for Tubur sub county notes that over 30 pigs are dying in his area daily due to African swine fever, leading to the drop in prices of pork in the area.

Alanyu reveals that a kilogram of pork which has been selling at 10,000 Shillings is now 6,000 Shillings in Eukasi market and Ogeesek trading centre among other busy centres.

Alanyu says that the communities have been told to destroy the carcass of the dead pigs...
