Cholera outbreak claims dozens of lives in Kyangwali Refugee settlement

Current 4% case fatality rate demands an extraordinary response
KAMPALA, Uganda ? UNHCR and health actors are deeply alarmed that the deteriorating situation in the Kyangwali area, as Uganda?s Ministry of Health confirmed an active outbreak of cholera. The Ministry immediately deployed a Rapid Response Team of 10 cholera control specialists and medical supplies to complement ongoing responses efforts.
?As of 22 February 2018, we have identified 668 cholera cases in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement,? said Dr. Julius Kasozi, UNHCR?s Public Health Officer. ?Of these, 26 died, giving a case fatality rate of nearly four per cent.? Dr. Kasozi explained that a case fatality rate of less than two percent is normally considered acceptable, and that the present trend demands an extraordinary response. The Ministry of Health also confirmed one cholera case in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement.
Investigations conducted by the Ministry of Health indicate that the refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo contract the infection from their places of origin and along the way to Uganda.
Dr. Kasozi confirmed that some of the patients crossing into Uganda over Lake Albert by boat present symptoms like diarrhoea and severe dehydration on arrival. ?It is possible that bacteria are spread through disease carriers who do not present symptoms, or through unhygienic practices like open defecation and drinking unsafe water from the lake,? he said...

EVENT DESCRIPTION

On 23 February 2018, the Uganda Ministry of Health notified WHO
of an outbreak of cholera in Kyangwali refugee settlement, located in
Hoima district in the western part of the country. The outbreak started
on 15 February 2018 when the index case, a 60-year-old man from
Sebigoro Landing Site, developed acute watery diarrhoea and vomiting.
On the same day (15 February 2018), two children ? one from a refugee
reception centre and the other from a new refugee settlement ? died of
acute watery diarrhoea and severe dehydration. Four stool specimens
collected from the initial cases were shipped to the Central Public
Health Laboratory (CPHL) in Kampala. Culture test results released on
19 February 2018 showed that two of the specimens isolated Vibrio
cholerae O1 serotype Inaba, confirming the outbreak. Additional two
specimens subsequently tested positive.

As of 23 February 2018, a total of 700 suspected cholera cases,
including 27 deaths (case fatality rate 3.9%) were reported. The affected
population are mostly newly arrived refugees and a few members of the
host community. The most affected places are a landing site at the shores
of Lake Albert and new refugee settlements in the neighbourhood.

Cholera Kills 29 in Hoima, more than 900 hospitalised

Cholera has killed 29 people in Hoima District, medical officers have confirmed.

The cholera outbreak was last week confirmed to have hit Congolese refugees in Kyangwali settlement camp who fled from fighting in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Reported cases

?We have registered 962 (Cholera) cases out of which 29 people have died,? said Dr Joseph Ruyonga, the Hoima district health officer on Tuesday.

The cholera outbreak which was confirmed by the Ministry of health has spread from Kyangwali refugee camp to various villages in Hoima District.
Sebagoro, Kyehoro, Kaiso, Nkondo in Kabwooya Sub County are among the affected areas.

Dr Nicholas Kwikiriza, a member of the district Cholera task force said they have confirmed two cholera cases in Busiisi division and one case in Kyarwabuyamba cell in Bujumbura division in Hoima municipality,...

Uganda: Death Toll of Uganda Cholera Epidemic Passes 30

Kampala ? MORE than 30 Congolese refugees died from a massive cholera epidemic in neighbouring Uganda this week. The death toll is from more than 1 000 cases reported in the refugee settlements of Hoima and Kyaka districts in the west and south west.

In Hoima, as of Monday, 1 056 suspected cases with 29 deaths had been reported. As of Tuesday, 39 suspected and confirmed cases and two deaths were reported in Kyaka.

The European Commission's Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations said it was monitoring the dire situation and supporting the refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)...

Hoima cholera death toll rises to 40

The number of people that have been infected with cholera in Hoima district has risen to over 2,000 with the cumulative death toll now standing at 40.

Dr Peter Byaruhanga, the acting Hoima district disease surveillance officer, told URN on Tuesday that 500 fresh cholera cases were reported among the Congolese refugees and members of the host communities at Kasonga, Sebigoro and Buhuka isolation centres in the last two weeks...

Kagadi, Hoima health workers grapple with cholera outbreak

Kagadi- The rapid outbreak of cholera, a highly contagious and deadly communicable disease, has strained healthcare workers in Kagadi and Hoima districts in Bunyoro Sub- region.

The outbreak was first reported in Kyangwali refugees? settlement camp and Buhuka landing site on Lake Albert in Hoima District in February and so far, it has claimed 44 lives.

Most victims are refugees fleeing tribal clashes in Eastern DR Congo, according to health workers.
Medical officers say the health systems in the two districts have been stretched given a scarcity of resource, limiting the care that should have been extended to the patients.

About 2,086 cholera cases have so far been reported in the two districts.
As the government and other aid workers battle the outbreak in Hoima District, the neighbouring Kagadi District is also facing similar challenges, particularly in Ndaiaga Sub-county on the Lake Albert shores...
