Uganda: Mbale Cholera Cases Rise to 110

Cholera re-surfaces in Sironko

A fresh outbreak of cholera has been reported in Eastern Uganda in Sironko district less than two months after several people were affected by the disease.

The latest outbreak has seen three people hospitalized.

One dead as cholera breaks out in Butaleja

Butaleja. At least one person has been confirmed dead and more than 25 others hospitalised following cholera outbreak in Butaleja District.

The district health department confirmed the outbreak in the area with the 25 cases at Nabiganda Health Centre IV.

The district health officer, Dr John Matovu, told Saturday Monitor in an interview on Thursday that they have recorded one death related to the disease since the outbreak was reported on Easter Monday.

He said the first suspected case was reported in Nabiganda Trading Centre in Kachonga Sub-county.

42 admitted to hospital with cholera in Namayingo district

A cholera outbreak in Namayingo district has left forty two people hospitalized.

The Assistant District Health Officer, Veronica Mukyala says most of the cases are admitted atBuyinja Health Center IV, while others are at the Red Cross Hospital in Busia.

Mukyalasays other cases have been reported in Bulundira, Busiro, Lugala and Banda Sub Counties, causing fears that the disease could spread even further...

Five districts hit with Cholera, 13 dead

Cholera outbreak has hit five districts in Eastern region; Butaleja and Namayengo have registered more cases. At the moment 13 people have died of the disease while more cases are still admitted at the health facilities.

In a phone interview, the District Health Officer (DHO) of Butaleja district Dr. John Matovu says they have so far registered 194 victims and 7 deaths. He explained that the five victims died from the health facilities while two from their homes...

Uganda: One Dead, Two Admitted Amidst Fears of Cholera Outbreak in Jinja

One person has died and two others admitted at Jinja referral hospital amidst fears of cholera outbreak in the district.

The Public Relation Officer of the Hospital Ms Sarah Mulonge confirmed that three cases had been reported at the hospital with symptoms similar to those of cholera disease, adding that one person had died, however the other two are being watched closely.

"It is true there are cholera cases reported in the facility. We are working out with a team from Ministry of Health in Kampala to isolate these patients from the rest," Ms Mulonge said...

Uganda: Three Dead As Suspected Cholera Strikes Mayuge

Mayuge ? Three people have been confirmed dead of suspected cholera at Bwondha Landing Site in Malongo Sub-county in Mayuge District.

Dr Charles Nabangi, the district health officer, said on Thursday the disease had claimed three people in one week and more than 18 were admitted to various health centres.

Uganda: Cholera Kills Four in Budaka

Budaka ? Cholera has struck Budaka District with four people confirmed dead and five others admitted to hospital.

The infected have been admitted in critical condition to Nansanga Health Centre, which has been designated as an isolation unit for treatment of cholera cases.

Mr Sam Wajega, the district health officer, told Sunday Monitor that seven cases had been recorded, including three deaths in less than two days. "So far seven cases have been registered and confirmed by the health officials, and the suspected victims have been confined at Nansanga health isolation centre for management. Health workers from the district have camped at the facility to curtail further spread," he said...

Three die in fresh cholera outbreak in Namayingo

Three people have died following a fresh outbreak of the cholera epidemic in Namayingo district.

They reportedly contracted the cholera virus after drinking water contaminated with fecal matter at Lugala landing site in Banda sub-county recently.

Getrude Taaka, 45, John Wafula, 34 and Patrick Ouma, 24, were all residents of Buyundo village.

The district health inspector Namayingo, Mafrey Oundo said majority of people residing especially on the landing sites always drink unboiled water that is likely to be contaminated with human waste, putting them at high risk of contracting cholera...

Cholera hits South Sudanese refugees in Uganda

KAMPALA, UGANDA - South Sudanese refugees fleeing fighting in their home country are contracting the cholera disease according to the Uganda Red Cross Society.

Robert Kwesiga, the Secretary General of the Uganda Red Cross Society while receiving relief items worth $250,000 from the United States based Lutheran World Relief said the disease has hit refugees in Yumbe, West Nile. The relief items included 160 Bales of Blankets and 220 cartons of school kits among others.

The donation of the relief items came at a time when Uganda is facing an influx of refugees and asylum seekers fleeing conflict in South Sudan.

The numbers of South Sudanese refugees who have crossed into Uganda from South Sudan in July are believed to be over 70,000 displaced by violence, according to the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR). The agency says that it is registering over 1,000 South Sudanese each day.

It brought the total number of South Sudanese refugees in Uganda at around 300,000.

Kwesiga said this crisis has severely stretched the capacity of Uganda?s refugee centres and constrained the country in terms of providing social services, food, health, education, water and sanitation services to the refugees and therefore any help accorded by donors goes a long way in making a huge impact to the refugees...

Uganda: Cholera Outbreak Confirmed in Amuru

Amuru ? The Ministry of Health has confirmed a cholera outbreak in Amuru District according to the district health officer, Dr Patrick Odong Olwedo.

Samples of patients from Elegu Border, Atiak Sub-county in Amuru District were taken to the government laboratory in Kampala and they turned out positive.

In an interview with Daily Monitor on Wednesday, Dr Odong said one person was admitted in the isolation ward at Bibia Health Centre III...

Uganda: Cholera Spreads to Two More Sub-Counties in Adjumani

Adjumani ? A cholera outbreak which was confirmed by the Ministry of Health early last month in Pagirinya refugee Settlement in Dzaipi Sub-county, Adjumani District has spread to two other sub-counties.

Health workers in the district have confirmed four cases of cholera in Boroli Refugee Settlement in Pakele sub-county while three people tested positive in Ukusijoni Sub-county, all in Adjumani District.

The Spread of cholera to other parts of the district has mainly been attributed to the booming trade in the refugee settlements.

However, the district health officer, Ms Ann Adunia, said patients are receiving treatment from an isolation centre at Pagirinya Health Centre III in Dzaipi Sub-county.

Ms Adunia urged the residents in the communities to avoid eating food sold on the road sides, embrace the use of pit-latrines and always drink treated or boiled water...

Three people are being treated at St Mary's Lacor hospital in Gulu district following a cholera outbreak in the area.

Dr Emmanuel Ochola, head of department of research and documentation says two of the patients tested positive for cholera while the third came to the hospital while already on treatment for the disease...

Uganda: Gulu Cholera Outbreak Contained

The three cholera patients admitted for treatment at St Mary's Hospital Lacor in Gulu have been discharged from isolation.

Dr Emmanuel Ochola, the head of HIV, research and documentation department says the hospital effectively contained the disease within days and no new cases have emerged.

Dr Ochola says the trio left the isolation ward on Friday after fully recovering from the disease. They were residents of Bibiya village in Elegu parish, Atiak sub-county in Amuru district...
