The United Arab Emirates announced Friday that one of six Filipino paramedics in the UAE who have been infected by the MERS coronavirus has died from the respiratory disease.

The announcement comes just days after a 24-hour shutdown of the emergency department at a major hospital in Saudi Arabia, where most cases have been reported, amid fears of a spread of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome among medical staff.

The UAE interior ministry said the six staff members worked at the Al-Ain Rescue and Ambulance Section in Abu Dhabi.

The ministry "has taken all necessary preventive health measures by placing the patients under quarantine," it said in a statement without specifying when the paramedic died.

It also urged people who have been transferred lately to hospitals to check on their condition, as a precautionary move...

...Ronnie Balilo, president of the non-profit Filipino Association for Computer Excellence (Face), said the unexpected death of Mr Esporlas, a paramedic, was a ?big loss? to the Filipino community in Al Ain, where he had served as a volunteer trainer with Face for many years...

...Mr Balilo said his compatriot went from healthy to ill in a short space of time.

?I was told that Abun was very joyful and even performed at the graduation,? said Mr Balilo, referring to a ceremony organised by Face, on April 4, at the Rotana Hotel in Al Ain. ?The function was held at 7pm and ended at midnight. The next day, he suffered from respiratory symptoms.?

Taken to Al Ain Hospital less than two days later, on Sunday April 6, the paramedic was told he had bronchitis, Mr Balilo said.

Later that evening, pneumonia was diagnosed, and by the following morning, Esporlas?s kidneys had started to fail. Mers was diagnosed on April 8.

?He was declared clinically dead on Tuesday,? Mr Balilo said. ?He was pronounced dead officially early Thursday morning.?

Vivian Palma, 42, who works at a private school in Al Ain and had known the victim since 2010, said Esporlas had not been his usual self at a friend?s birthday party on April 3.

?His face was pale and he was unusually quiet that evening,? she said. ?But, he still attended the graduation ceremony the next day. He?s really nice and was like a big brother to me. I can?t believe he?s gone.?...

ABU DHABI // A paramedic who died last week after contracting the Mers coronavirus infected 10 colleagues, the World Health Organisation said on Tuesday.

Abundio Verzosa Esporlas, 45, an Al Ain Rescue and Ambulance Section worker from the Philippines, died on Thursday after developing flu-like symptoms.

It was not known whether the WHO figure included five Al Ain Rescue workers who had direct contact with Esporlas before his death and are in precautionary quarantine.

WHO said it had been informed of the 10 new cases by UAE health authorities.

However, in a statement released through the state news agency Wam, the Health Authority Abu Dhabi (Haad) said it had identified an additional three cases after screening healthcare workers in Al Ain.

Officials at Haad refused to comment on the discrepancy in the figures...
