Washington DC - After several days of intense debate, the U.S. government informed the World Health Organization (WHO) that will not destroy the strains of smallpox virus that has kept " zealously "in their laboratories
The U.S. health secretary, Kathleen Sebelius , said that the strains can not be deleted due to fears in Washington that in the future this virus could be used as a biological weapon by some group or government that promotes terrorism.
"If it is filtering this virus strain may need to manufacture new and better vaccines," said Sebelius, who recalled that Russia is another country with reserves of this dangerous and deadly virus.
For centuries, smallpox killed one third of those infected, but was eradicated three decades ago. The last known case was in Britain in 1978.
