Wichita hospitals holding COVID patients in ERs as surge outnumbers available beds

Wichita hospitals are so overloaded with COVID-19 patients that some are being held in emergency rooms while waiting for beds to open up, according to the county’s top public health official.

Dr. Garold Minns, Sedgwick County health officer and dean of the Kansas University Medical School-Wichita, outlined the situation Monday morning during a media briefing with the University of Kansas Health System.

“I just got a text saying the ERs are sitting down there with COVID positive patients just sitting in there on gurneys waiting for a room to open up,” Minns said. ...

More people are in the emergency room, waiting for beds to open up. Nurses are working grueling 16-hour shifts, racing between rooms, trying to keep up with the growing onslaught of sick patients.

... “It has been so stressful and chaotic and heartbreaking, to say the least,” said one hospital worker who helps treat COVID-19 patients at Mercy Health Muskegon.
The worker didn’t have permission from the hospital to speak publicly, and asked that their name not be used in this story, out of fear of being fired.

... But the union that represents workers at the hospital blames leaders for not doing enough to prepare for a fall surge in coronavirus cases that many saw coming. Union representatives say the hospital’s failures are putting staff and patients at risk.

Tinitco Moore said some workers have decided it’s more than they can handle. Moore works at the hospital and serves as a union steward. She says her phone starts going off at 6 a.m. with notices from coworkers who are having problems.

Acevedo said, as of Thursday, 179 workers at Mercy Health Muskegon were out with the COVID-19 virus.A spokesperson for the hospital says 111 workers have tested positive.

Renown confirms first COVID-19 patients at its parking garage alternate care site

Seven months after it first retrofitted a parking garage as a deployable medical structure due to the pandemic, Renown Health has started taking in its first COVID-19 patients at the alternate care site.

Renown Regional Medical Center confirmed on Monday that it started moving some COVID-19 patients to the parking garage as the greater Reno-Sparks area sees a surge in COVID-19 hospitalizations.

“We are currently caring for 10 patients in our Alternate Care Site,” Renown said in an e-mailed response to the Reno Gazette Journal. “These patients are clinically stable or improving, and do not require critical care.”

CEDARVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine addressed the Miami Valley from his home in Cedarville Wednesday morning.

DeWine, along with Doctor Kevin Sharrett of Kettering Health Network, discussed the recent spike in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and ICU admissions throughout Ohio and specifically in southwest Ohio.

... But the hospital she’s currently being treated at told them in-hospital treatments for the cancer and stroke have been pushed back to Jan. 1 at the earliest.

Some hospitals hit capacity as Michigan adds 7,458 COVID-19 cases

Some hospitals in Michigan are filling up as the state reports another 7,458 cases of COVID-19 on the eve of a new shutdown of businesses aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus.

Several hospitals in Michigan reported being at capacity while more than a dozen hospitals reported being over 90 percent capacity, according to the state health department.

The full hospitals include Ascension St. Joseph Hospital in East Tawas, Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph, Ascension Hospital in Standish and MidMichigan Medical Center in Alma.

Statewide, the number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 was 3,320 as of Tuesday. A month ago when there were around 1,000.

Over 900 Mayo staff contract COVID-19 in last 2 week period; COVID-19 ICU at capacity

With virus numbers rising in the Midwest, Mayo Clinic is preparing for increasing hospitalizations while they are already being stretched thin.

ABC affiliate KAAL reports, there are a total of 32 ICU beds in the clinic's General Medicine ICU dedicated for care of COVID-19 patients, and it is currently filled.

Clinic officials say they are in the process of adding more beds in the coming weeks. But general care beds are also needed because of the number of transfer patients.

The three things Mayo Clinic say it needs are staffing, space and supplies.

  • A travel nurse named Lawanna Rivers recently recorded a Facebook Live video in which she described her experience treating COVID-19 patients at the University Medical Center of El Paso.
  • El Paso, Texas, has emerged as a hot spot of the coronavirus as the US battles its third spike of the pandemic.
  • In the video, Rivers said the hospital's sickest COVID-19 patients were put in a "pit" that doctors didn't enter for fear of exposing themselves to the virus.
  • "My first day at orientation, I was told that whatever patients go into the pit, they only come out in a body bag," she said, adding that the assignment in El Paso had been her worst of the pandemic.
  • The hospital told KFOX 14 it "cannot fully verify the events expressed" in Rivers' video but acknowledged the "difficult, physical and emotional toll" the pandemic had taken on health workers.

Hospitals in at least 25 states are critically short of nurses, doctors, and other staff as coronavirus cases surge across the United States, according to the industry’s trade association and a tally conducted by STAT. The situation has gotten so bad that in some places, severely ill patients have been transferred hundreds of miles for an available bed — from Texas to Arizona, and from central Missouri to Iowa.

The American Hospital Association’s vice president of quality and patient safety, Nancy Foster, said she’s heard from two dozen hospital leaders over the past two weeks, warning her of staffing shortages in states including Texas, North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Health care providers in Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Ohio, Missouri, Michigan, and Utah said they’re facing the same problem, as do local reports from New Mexico, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Indiana, Montana, California, Rhode Island, and South Carolina.

From reimbursement landscape challenges to dwindling patient volumes, many factors lead hospitals to file for bankruptcy. At least 32 hospitals across the U.S. have filed this year, and the financial challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic may force more hospitals to enter bankruptcy in coming months.

Lower patient volumes, canceled elective procedures and higher expenses have created a cash crunch for hospitals, many of which were already operating on thin margins. U.S. hospitals are estimated to lose more than $323 billion this year, according to a report from the AmericanHospital Association.
