BEXAR COUNTY, Texas ? Authorities are investigating a recent mumps outbreak at the Bexar County Jail, officials said.
Nine inmates have reported symptoms resembling those related to mumps, but only five cases have been confirmed.
Of those, two inmates have been taken to University Hospital and one has been released from the jail.
Inmates started showing symptoms July 16, causing three jail units to be quarantined. Bexar County Sheriff Amadeo Ortiz said about 160 prisoners have been isolated from the rest of the population.
It wasn't immediately known where the virus originated, but Dr. Fernando Guerra, director of the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, said steps are being taken to identify people who have been exposed to infected inmates.
Ortiz said staffers have begun to sterilize the facility, and jailers with exposure risks are wearing gloves and masks to prevent further spread of the disease
Vaccines will be available to jail employees and to the families of recently released offenders, officials said.
Inmates get a medical screening before booking, officials said.
