Dallas County reports first death of '09 from West Nile virus 3:31 PM CT

03:42 PM CDT on Tuesday, September 15, 2009

From Staff Reports

Dallas County health officials have confirmed the first death in the county this year from West Nile virus.

The victim lived in Duncanville. Citing a need for medical confidentiality and personal privacy, the Dallas County Department of Health and Human Services provided no additional identifying information.

?While this death is unfortunate, it should serve as a reminder to our community that the West Nile Virus is being carried by mosquitoes in this area,? said Zachary Thompson, director of the department.

?It is important that residents do their part by taking the necessary precautions to avoid exposure to the virus.?

In all, nine cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Dallas County in 2009.

Mosquitoes are especially prevalent around dawn and dusk.

The best way to avoid exposure, authorities say, is to practice "the three D's:

-- Use insect repellent containing DEET;

-- Drain standing water;

-- Dress in long, loose, light-colored clothing.

To report or inquire about mosquito activity in Dallas County, call 214....
