Health officials are working to contain the spread of the mumps virus inside the Harris County Jail, and have quarantined 300 inmates.

HOUSTON ? The Houston Public Heath Department has confirmed 7 cases of mumps inside the Harris County Jail. According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, six inmates and one staff member have tested positive for the virus.

Mumps has broken out at a Texas jail, sickening 11 prisoners and three medical staff members who have been restricted to isolation, officials said Thursday.

Meanwhile, a total of about 300 other inmates that may have come into contact with the infected prisoners have been quarantined, the Harris County Sheriff?s Office said during a press conference, Houston Public Media reported.

The number of quarantined inmates at the Harris County jail has doubled in one week because of a mumps outbreak, a spokesman for the Houston Health Department told News 88.7 on Friday. Currently, there are approximately 600 quarantined inmates, while the number was 300 as of Thursday, June 13.

Porfirio Villarreal said the number of confirmed mumps cases is still seven, six inmates and one jail staffer were diagnosed. Another eight people are being monitored for potential infection. That?s one more than what Dr. David Persse, Houston?s EMS medical director, reported last week.

Jail medical staff first recognized an inmate with mumps symptoms in mid-May...

More Than 400 Mumps Cases Confirmed In Texas Immigrant Facilities
Immigration officials have yet to contain a mumps outbreak that started in October 2018.

More than 100 new mumps cases have been identified in Texas immigrant holding facilities in the last five weeks, according to data obtained by News 88.7.

The Texas Department of State Health Services has confirmed 436 total cases of mumps since the outbreak started in October 2018.

The count of mumps cases includes all federal facilities that hold immigrants, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and shelters that hold unaccompanied migrant children, according to state officials....
