Mumps outbreak confirmed at ICE detention facility in Houston
Updated 30 mins ago

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) --
The Houston Health Department confirmed seven mumps cases at an U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Houston Saturday afternoon.

Officials said that all seven people were adults who were detained during the time they became sick.

"Since these individuals were isolated inside the facility during the period they were infectious, we do not anticipate these cases posing a threat to the community," said Dr. David Persse, Houston's local health authority and EMS medical director."

The health department says they are working with the facility on infection control methods and will conduct an on-site visit soon...

Hidalgo County mumps outbreak may have link to Mission gym

An outbreak of the mumps in Hidalgo County may be linked to a Mission gym.

Mission called an emergency City Council meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday to: ?Authorize City of Mission departments to take immediate action necessary to preserve the health and safety of the citizens of Mission due to health concerns related to a local business establishment.?

Two members of the City Council said Mission called the emergency meeting to address an illness with an apparently connection to a local gym. One said the illness was the mumps; the other said staff hadn?t specified the illness. Both said the illness apparently had a connection to a local gym.

?Apparently there is an issue,? said City Councilman Ruben Plata. ?Some people got sick.?

A University of Texas Rio Grande Valley student contracted the mumps ? a contagious virus that causes fever, muscle aches and swelling of the salivary glands ? last week, said Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Chief Administrative Officer Eduardo "Eddie" Olivarez.

Lab results confirmed the diagnosis at about 5 p.m. Wednesday. Other people with similar symptoms probably contracted the mumps too, Olivarez said, but lab results remain pending.

?We probably do have an outbreak of mumps in Hidalgo County,? Olivarez said...

Mumps cases found in every major Hidalgo County city

A massive education campaign led by the county health department aims to increase awareness and prevention of mumps, a contagious disease caused by a virus that is currently present in the Rio Grande Valley.

Last week, a case of mumps was found at Bryan Elementary School, which is part of the Mission Consolidated Independent School District. When the discovery was made at the campus, students were sent home with a letter detailing how the district was handling the sanitation of the school and phone calls were made that same evening.

immunizationsIn the letter, information on how the virus is spread, symptoms of the mumps and vaccination details were all highlighted. It also encouraged families to keep sick children out of school.

According to Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Director Eduardo Olivarez, keeping the public informed in this way is one of the ways to keep the virus contained.

?Of all the cases [in the county], over half of them are between 20 and 30 years old, which is odd,? Olivarez said. ?We?re talking with the CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] and the Department of State Health Services, and we can?t figure it out. It?s not a new strain or a wild strain, it?s genotype ?G? for general mumps. Across the country it?s all the same age group, so we don?t think it was a bad lot of vaccines because it?s so spread out.?

As of 10 a.m. Monday morning, 46 confirmed cases of the mumps have been diagnosed in Hidalgo County since the end of March/beginning of April...
