Two years after the first case of COVID-19, Côte d'Ivoire is working to build a resilient community

March 11, 2022

Two years ago, Côte d'Ivoire recorded its first case of COVID-19. Indeed, on Wednesday March 11, 2020, a 45-year-old man, of Ivorian nationality, having stayed in Italy, with suspicious symptoms, was tested positive for COVID-19 by the laboratory. He was then taken care of by the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Department (SMIT) of the University Hospital of Treichville (Abidjan).

First, located in Abidjan, in the economic capital, the disease gradually spread within the country, affecting all health districts. As of March 10, 2022, the country has recorded a cumulative of 81,577 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 795 deaths attributable to the said pathology.

During these two years, with the technical and financial support of partners including the World Health Organization (WHO), and in order to stem the spread of the virus, a set of public health measures have been decided and implemented by the country, among which the isolation of the city of Abidjan from the rest of the country, the suspension of international travel, the quarantine of contacts, the closure of educational establishments, the limitation of gatherings, the closure of places of leisure and catering. These measures were reinforced with the deployment of the vaccine initiated on March 1 [SUP],[/SUP] 2021 and which, on March 8, 2022, enabled 4,178,108 people to be fully vaccinated for 10,413,731 doses administered.

As part of the response, the World Health Organization (WHO) continues to support the country in the implementation of key strategies, such as improved screening and care, surveillance and diagnosis. in the laboratory, risk communication and community engagement, training of front-line health workers, through assistance in the form of advisory support, technical and logistical support.

“We have been at the forefront of efforts to roll back this pandemic and we continue to support all the efforts that national authorities are undertaking to effectively combat COVID-19 and ensure the safety of the population ,” said Dr Jean Marie. Vianny YAMEOGO, WHO Representative in Côte d'Ivoire.

In efforts to control the pandemic, vaccination remains an essential strategy. This is why, in collaboration with other partner organizations, the WHO is focusing on strengthening people's adherence to vaccination. Despite the significant progress recorded, more efforts are needed to reach a larger part of the population and protect them from the risk of serious illness and death.

“What a long way since the first confirmed case of COVID-19 on March 11, 2020! For the health response to COVID-19 in Côte d'Ivoire, WHO support has enabled the alignment of interventions and support from several technical and financial partners (United Nations, bi- and multilateral institutions, NGOs) distributed across all pillars of the response. May the country's experience in the fight against COVID-19 serve as a springboard for future actions in order to keep the populations of Côte d'Ivoire resilient and ready to face any major public health event" , concluded Dr YAMEOGO.
