Bolivian authorities reported Monday that two soldiers died and another 160 are under observation for an outbreak of hantavirus in a training school in the south of the country.
The Minister of Defense, Javier Zavaleta, confirmed that the deceased are two officers and explained that the case occurred in the School of Condors in Yacuiba, about 750 kilometers south of La Paz. The school is a unit that forms military elite.
The deaths occurred last week but recently the tests tested positive for hantavirus, so over the weekend it was decided to evacuate 160 people - from military and civilian personnel - to the city of Santa Cruz, said Fernando Sattori, secretary of Human Development.
Local health authorities reported that nine uniformed officers had direct contact with the two dead.
In a statement, the army regretted the death of two of its officers and reported that isolation centers have been designated in three cities - La Paz, Cochabamba and Trinidad - for people who have recently gone to school.
Hantavirus is a viral disease transmitted by wild mice that affects the lungs. The contagion occurs by contact with the stool, urine and saliva of the rodent. It presents with symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, chills, headaches, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and sometimes pain in the abdominal area or lower part of the spine. In Bolivia, according to data from the Ministry of Health, 74 cases of hantavirus were reported last year. Two soldiers died of the disease when they were infected while they were carrying out coca eradication in the town of La Asunta, north of La Paz.
