Two passengers test positive for COVID on Celebrity Millennium 'fully vaccinated' cruise

Two passengers from the United States who shared a room on board Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Millennium ship, which was billed as carrying "fully vaccinated crew and guests", have tested positive for COVID-19, the cruise line said in a statement.

The tests came back positive during end-of-cruise testing, which is completed 72 hours before passengers return to the U.S., Celebrity Cruises spokesperson Jonathon Fishman told USA TODAY.

All adult passengers were required to show proof of vaccination in addition to a negative COVID-19 test within a 72-hour period before the ship departed from the Caribbean island of St. Maarten Saturday.

Children under the age of 12 are not yet eligible for COVID-19 vaccinations in the U.S., where the majority of passengers are from. Fishman noted there were fewer than 10 children on board and said no other vaccine exemptions had been granted.

There are more than 1,200 people on board the ship.

The individuals are asymptomatic and currently in isolation and being monitored by our medical team. Cruises Just Restarted And Passengers Are Already Testing Positive For Covid-19 Again

Two passengers have tested positive for Covid-19 on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, just weeks after cruises were permitted to restart by the CDC. The Celebrity Millenniumwas the first ship to set sail from North America with paying passengers since the U.S. cruise industry was shut down last year.

Those traveling on the ship adhered to CDC guidelinesaimed at helping re-start cruises. All of the crew and passengers over the age of 16 presented proof of vaccination as well as a negative Covid-19 test within 72 hours of boarding the ship.

... The news comes just a day after two passengers on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean tested positive and were removed from the ship. A negative Covid-19 test within 96 hours of boarding was required for the MSC Seasidecruise, but no vaccination.

... The news was met with dismay from many travelers, with some saying that they would not be joining any cruise with unvaccinated guests on board.
