Two new Czech bird flu cases detected in Moravia

Prague- Vets have discovered two new cases of bird flu in dead swans found in southern Moravia, State Veterinary Authority spokesman Josef Duben said.
Tests have confirmed the H5 virus in both birds, and a highly contagious form in one case, he added.
In all, 14 cases of bird flu have occurred in the Czech Republic. The previous 12 dead swans were found in South Bohemia and all of them were infected with the H5N1 strain, dangerous to humans.
Special measures will now be introduced in the critical area. The towns and villages situated in the zones of strict protection and supervision must make a count of all household poultry breeds and secure containers for the dead birds.
Local breeders must not keep poultry in open-air enclosures.
A ban will be imposed on the transfer of poultry, eggs and further material, and access to poultry farms will be limited. Steps will be taken to secure disinfection of the people and cars in contact with the farms.
The measures are to last at least 21 days.
The previous special measures were cancelled on May 10.

Ha Noi (VNA) - Two more cases of bird flu have been identified in the Czech Republic in recent days, bringing the country's total number of cases to 14, according to the State Veterinary Administration (SUS).

Two wild swans were found dead near the village of Kostice in the southeast of the country, SUS said on May 19, adding that in one of them the presence of a highly pathogenic virus was detected.

He said any formal identification of the H5N1 virus, potentially fatal to humans, would be made by the national laboratory charged with the task in the coming days.

Protection and surveillance zones with a radius of three kilometres and 10 kilometres respectively have been established around Kostice.

The same day, Denmark reported its first outbreak of the H5N1 strain of bird flu in domestic fowl.

The Danish Institute for Food and Veterinary Research confirmed that the outbreak was in a backyard poultry flock on the central island of Funen.

The owners had contacted authorities after 47 birds in the flock died earlier this week. Denmark previously had confirmed 47 cases of H5N1 in wild birds.

Meanwhile, Romanian Agriculture Minister Gheorghe Flutur said on May 19 that the bird flu virus has continued to spread across the country.

Speaking on Romanian television, he said 20 outbreaks had been confirmed over the past week, bringing the number of localities affected to over 60.
