CEDAR RAPIDS - The state?s second and third deaths from H1N1 flu were being reported this morning.

Curtis Dickson, director of Linn County Public Health, said both happened in eastern Iowa.

Dickson said in both the recent cases, the patients had ?personal factors? that may have put them at high risk for H1N1-related complications. The two new cases were unrelated.

Dickson was referencing information from the Iowa Department of Public Health and could not say whether or not either of the deaths occurred in Linn County.

Iowa?s first death from H1N1 flu was announced in August.

That person was a middle-aged Eastern Iowan. No further information, including whether or not the person had an underlying medical condition, was released.

Unlike seasonal flu, H1N1 flu is disproportionately affecting the young. Most flu in Iowa is being reported in 5- to 24-year-olds.

Laboratory data shows nearly all influenza-like illnesses in Iowa are due to the novel H1N1 influenza virus.

Ten Iowans were hospitalized with H1N1 from Sept. 1 until Sept. 19, the most recent data available. That includes two people in Region 6, which includes Linn, Johnson and 12 surrounding counties.

Two Iowa men die after H1N1 infection

BY TONY LEYS ? tleys@dmreg.com ? September 28, 2009

Two eastern Iowa men with other health problems have died from H1N1 flu, the Iowa Department of Public Health reported today.

They were the second and third Iowa deaths from the new virus.

The department said the two cases were not related, but they both involved adult males in the eastern part of the state. Both men had ?personal factors that may have put them at higher risk for H1N1-related complications,? a news release said.

The department said the fact that both men were from eastern Iowa does not indicate the virus is more prevalent or severe there. The virus is believed to have spread throughout the state.

?Iowans of all ages and in every part of the state should take precautions to prevent getting or spreading the virus,? said Dr. Patricia Quinlisk, state epidemiologist. ?These precautions include getting the seasonal influenza vaccine now, and when appropriate, being vaccinated for the H1N1 virus. She also reminded people to wash their hands frequently; cough and sneeze into a tissue or sleeve; and stay home if they feel ill.

Two H1N1 Deaths Confirmed in Eastern Iowa

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has received laboratory results confirming the second and third deaths associated with the novel influenza A (H1N1) virus in Iowa.

Both victims were adult males in Eastern Iowa. Both had personal factors that may have put them at higher risk for H1N1-related complications. The cases are not related. The novel influenza A (H1N1) virus continues to circulate in Iowa; IDPH surveillance indicates influenza and influenza-like illness are increasing across the state.

These deaths serve as a reminder the virus has the potential to cause severe disease and even death. Although the H1N1-related fatalities occurred in Eastern Iowa, it is not an indication the virus is more severe or prevalent in that area of the state.

?Iowans of all ages and in every part of the state should take precautions to prevent getting or spreading the virus,? said IPDH Medical Director Dr. Patricia Quinlisk. ?These precautions include getting the seasonal influenza vaccine now, and when appropriate, being vaccinated for the H1N1 virus.?

Additionally, Iowans should remember the Three Cs:
Clean your hands frequently
Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your sleeve
Contain germs by staying home when ill

IDPH is prohibited by Iowa law from releasing any additional information that could lead to the identification of the persons who died.
