Two more influenza-confirmed deaths have been recorded in Middlesex-London, but while activity remains present there are signs of decline.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit reported on Monday (Jan. 27) that from Jan. 20-26, 13 cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza A and one case of influenza B were reported, including two deaths. The number of new cases reported last week is lower than the 27 cases reported to the health unit in the period from Jan. 13-19. Since Sept. 1, 2013, a total of 155 laboratory-confirmed influenza A cases and two cases of influenza B have been reported.

Currently, 32 out of 155 influenza A samples have been subtyped, and all have been found to be influenza A (H1N1) pdm09. This is the same strain that circulated during the 2009 pandemic and is a component in the 2013/14 influenza vaccine.

To date, 60 percent of laboratory-confirmed influenza cases reported in Middlesex-London have been among adults between the ages of 20 and 64. Children under the age of five years continue to be over-represented among laboratory-confirmed influenza cases, relative to their representation in the general population. Children under five years represent only 5.5 percent of the general population in Middlesex-London, but account for 19 percent of cases.

Of the 14 influenza cases identified from Jan. 20-26, six (43 percent) were hospitalized. Since Sept. 1, there have been 76 hospitalizations among the 157 people with laboratory-confirmed influenza (48 percent).

Since Sept. 1, six deaths have been reported among people with laboratory-confirmed influenza.
