A Nanaimo man is the second Vancouver Island casualty of the H1N1 flu this season, according to Island Health.

?There have been two deaths in Island Health hospitals where influenza is suspected to have been a contributing factor, one in late December and one this week,? said Sarah Plank, Island Health spokeswoman.

One victim was between 20 and 65 years and the other was over 80, she said.

Few details about the Nanaimo man were available, except that he had a pre-existing condition and was not elderly.

Island Health has confirmed the province's second death of the season tied to the H1N1 virus occurred in Nanaimo over the holidays.

Twenty-eight cases of H1N1 have been confirmed on Vancouver Island, but many more are suspected.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall says the number of people suffering through symptoms on the island this year is close to average, but the confirmed cases have been more serious than in years past.
