Two die of suspected dengue in Chinchwad

PUNE: Two people from Punawale village, who were rushed to a private hospital in Thergaon, died on Sunday. Doctors, who are awaiting post-mortem
reports, suspect it to be dengue.
"One woman was brought to our hospital on March 27. She had fever, diarrhoea and was vomiting. Her blood pressure and platelet count was quite low and she died on Sunday morning. A man was admitted on Sunday morning with similar symptoms who died later in the day," said medical officer of Sai Jyoti Hospital in Thergaon requesting anonymity. The hospital is treating another patient with similar symptoms who was hospitalised on March 27, but her health is stable now, he added.
Brushing off the possibility of drinking water contamination, the medical officer said, "Though the initial reports were negative, possibility of dengue cannot be ruled out completely as antibodies manifest themselves only after the first five days. I strongly suspect they died of dengue infection."
When contacted, corporator of Rawet-Punawale ward Ganesh Bhondwe said, "The village has number of personal borewell water pumps. Hence the water getting contaminated at source cannot be ruled out."
Countering the view, Harvindersingh Bansal, junior engineer (water-supply) at Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) said, "Rawet-Punwale gets drinking water through tankers provided by the PCMC every alternative day. I don't think the death occurred due to drinking water contamination. As a precautionary measure, we have started cleaning water containers that supply water to the village for washing purpose."
P D Rokde, medical officer of the post-mortem centre of YCMH said, "We have sent the blood samples for chemical analysis to Regional Forensic Science Laboratory today (Sunday). The cause of death will be ascertained only after we get the report."
Chief health officer of PCMC, Nagkumar Kunchagi said, "I have directed sanitary inspector and medical social worker to take water samples for inspection. Since villagers in Punawale have installed borewell pumps, there is need to see whether the water is fit for consumption."
