172 cases of dengue since outbreak

​Since the beginning of the dengue outbreak in the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Ministry of Health has identified 172 cases of dengue.

According to a press release, these cases include cases confirmed through testing at the Caribbean Public Health Laboratory (90) as well as cases identified locally through the use of dengue rapid tests. The cases are distributed as follows: 167 in Providenciales and 5 in Grand Turk

Dengue virus types were established for 76 out of the 90 laboratory confirmed cases. Seventy-four (74) laboratory confirmed cases were type 3 and 2 were type 2 Dengue. Type 3 dengue is associated with more severe disease.

A total of 18 persons with dengue have been hospitalized. There have been no reports of any dengue related deaths.

Age groups affected are primarily 20-59 years age group followed by 6-19 years. The most affected communities in Providenciales are Blue Hills followed by Five Cays.

A greater proportion of males, 60.5% (n=104) were detected with dengue when compared to females with 37.8% (n=65) (for the remainder, no gender was documented).

297 cases of dengue in TCI since outbreak

​There have been 279 cases of dengue in Turks and Caicos Islands since the outbreak, Minister of Health Shaun Malcolm announced.

He said these cases include 104 cases that were confirmed through testing at the Caribbean Public Health Laboratory (CARPHA) as well as cases identified locally through the use of dengue rapid tests.

The cases are distributed as follows: 269 Providenciales; 7 Grand Turk; 2 North Caicos and one in South Caicos. He said dengue virus types were established for 87 out of the 104 laboratory confirmed cases, adding that 85 laboratory confirmed cases were type 3 and two were type 2 Dengue. Type 3 dengue is associated with more severe disease.

Malcom said a total of 28 persons with dengue have been hospitalized but there have been no reports of any dengue related deaths.​..
